Description

Imagine stepping back in time to the 1890s and truly escaping from the troubles of the modern world. Built in 1895 as the home for Nobel Prize winning Jungle Book author Rudyard Kipling’s coachman, Matthew Howard, and his family, this beautiful home has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and can sleep up to 4 guests. The property is a National Historic Landmark site, the highest level of historic designation available in America. The space Kipling’s Carriage House is warm and welcoming, offering an immersive experience with history. The first floor includes a living room with a gas fireplace and an open-concept kitchen/dining room. The kitchen has everything you need to cook a holiday meal except the food (but lots of great restaurants and grocery stores are mere minutes away, and we can even connect you with personal chefs!). It is fully equipped, including a dishwasher, and seating at a tile counter with views of the meadow, forests, and valley to the south. The living room features real wood paneling, a charming desk, and comfortable seating. Our small library contains an assortment of books on regional history, culture, and of course Rudyard Kipling! The second floor includes one bedroom with a queen-size bed, a second bedroom with two twin beds, and a full bath. In the basement, guests will find a ping pong table, a washer and dryer, and a stone-lined cold storage room, ideal for storing wine bottles. The house sits on the edge of the forest covering Kipling Hill. Below is an open meadow with superb views of the Connecticut River Valley. In the early mornings, you may see foxes, deer, or wild turkeys. One of Vermont's first tennis courts is also located on the property. Guest access Check in is 4pm or later and check out is by 10 am. The week before your arrival you will receive details to get the key. You'll share a long driveway with Naulakha, Rudyard Kipling's home where he wrote the Jungle Book, Captains Courageous, Kim, and many of his other best known works. Trash pick up is on Wednesdays and mowing is scheduled for Thursdays (weather permitting). Otherwise you should not be disturbed, but we are close by if you need us. Other things to note Brattleboro has been voted one of the 10 best towns in America to live in. In the summer enjoy festivals and fairs, hiking, biking or paddling on one of its many rivers, lakes or ponds. The town is alive with local artists, musicians and crafts people. While here visit museums and galleries. Brattleboro is also a destination for beer lovers! Enjoy a pint of local crafted beer in one of our 3 microbreweries and bring home a growler or two. Every person in the family can be pleased with a wide selection of excellent restaurants and fine dining. Kids will enjoy farms where they can pet the animals, parks to run and play, or take a class at the New England Center for Circus Arts. The New England Youth Theatre has plays and performances all year long. If you love music, enjoy a show at the Jazz Center, a concert at the Latchis Theatre, or see the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. The Brattleboro Farmers Market draws people from all over New England for it's incredible selection of local crafts, food, wine, and plants. The first Friday of every month is Gallery Walk, where locals visit downtown stores that display art, live music and food sampling.
