This is an historic 1826 house just four blocks from the train station and near our downtown art gallery, antique stores and restaurants! Set back from the street, it features amazing architectural details, a large Southern-style porch and much more. This house is my country art studio and home and was recently featured in The Milford Journal, The Sussex Journal and the Orange and Sullivan Journal. For a look go to: http://www.milfordjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/July.pdf There are currently two bedrooms for rent on the second floor—one with a Queen-size bed and the other with a full-size (double) bed. The new and modern bathroom is just outside of both rooms. (The house has six bedrooms, but I’m still working on some of them!) Others may be available soon. I have one cat—PJ—who can be contained in his own suite, if necessary, but people with extreme allergies to cat hair should be forewarned! While I love dogs, I cannot accommodate them at this moment. This house sits back from the street across from the Dutch Reformed Church and is one of the largest properties on Main Street, having been a doctor’s home and office for most of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Ask me to show you the working speaker tube, which connects the outside of the house to the upstairs where the doctor slept! The house features four carved, fluted Ionic columns with a pediment holding an original nineteenth-century fan window. The foyer is round with a curved staircase and hand-chamfered curved mahogany doors. The downstairs common areas consist of a The Round Foyer (Take a picture on the stairs!), a Music Room with a baby grand piano, a Living Room, a Media Room with some cable stations (not all), a large Dining Room and ample Kitchen, all of which you are welcome to enjoy. In the morning a complimentary light breakfast is available for you—juices, coffee, teas, cereals, yogurt, fruit in season, toast, bagels and/or muffins. You can use my fully-equipped kitchen, as necessary, if you want to cook your own provisions. There is a backyard with a summer fountain and small pond, a stone fence, gazebo and seating. The front porch is right out of “Gone with the Wind” and you are free to sit there if it is warm enough for you. It’s lovely to have a glass of wine out and watch night set in. People tell me I’m friendly and I enjoy interaction if you do! There are times when I am busy and will be less available for conversation. There are always things to do in the area, and I will share what's going on with you if you wish. A binder in your room will acquaint you with things to do and include discount coupons for a nearby gift emporium. While I am located on a somewhat busy street--at least during the day-- my house is set back from the road and it is very quiet. It’s a walkable area—there’s a corner (limited selection) convenience store a block away, banking, a post office, two diners, pizza and Chinese eateries, a Carnegie Library, a bowling alley, a health food store in the old train station and drug stores all within two or three blocks. There are churches of all denominations, as well as a synagogue only few blocks away. Next door to my house is the Crane House (now a Law Office), where Stephen Crane wrote “Red Badge of Courage” and a block away is the park where he interviewed Civil War veterans for his book. Nearby we have the Tri-State rock, where you can stand in three states at once, Point Peter (a park high above the city with picnicking and great views), the Hawk’s Nest (a beautiful curvy drive that has spectacular views of the Delaware), Gillander Glass (where you can tour and see glass objects made), the Upfront Gallery, antique stores, High Point Park, Kadampa Temple (a Buddhist temple 20 minutes away), the Delaware Water Gap and its many trails and waterfalls, and lots of outdoor activities such as swimming, kayaking, tubing, biking, skiing, the historic town of Milford, Pa, and great shopping at The Phoenix on Route 209 in Dingman’s Ferry, open from April through December (10% discount for all of my guests with coupon left in your room). Restaurants in town are Len and Jo's, The Creamery (in season), The Erie Hotel, The PJ DIner and Roy's (Homer's)--the latter is a block away from the house. For ethnic dining, there is a good Mexican Restaurant just a bit out of town on Route 6 called El Patron. Turn right out of my driveway, go past the ramp for Route 84, and you're almost there! A gourmet place is Two Rivers Grill in Matamoras, PA, just past the bridge on the right. In Milford there is great food at the Bar Louis at the Fauchere Hotel. The Water Wheel, also in Milford, is good for lunch and light fare and the bar downstairs often has music. For fast food, we have a Burger King and Dunkin' Donuts in town and a McDonald's and Dairy Queen (think Blizzards!) just on the edge of town in Montague, New Jersey. Gas is always cheaper there than in New York, by the way, due to lower taxes. There is a train from New York’s Penn Station (transfer at Secaucus Junction) that will take you to Port Jervis. (Quite a beautiful ride, but it isn't short--2-plus hours!) Once in Port Jervis, it’s four longish blocks to my house, which I do all the time. I’ve never used the local taxis, but plenty of my friends do. There is also a Coach Bus service, but you need to get picked up on the edge of town near Route 84 and it doesn’t seem that convenient to me. My house has plenty of off-street parking, so your best bet is to rent a car, which gives you the ability to explore the entire region. By car, I am located just minutes from Route 84, Exit 1. When you see the big church on your right, slow down. There is a median in the street that begins just before my house. At the first curb cut, turn left, straight into my driveway on the left side of the street. Watch out for oncoming traffic! Park on left alongside the house or the fence. Leave the back carriage house bays clear, so cars inside can get out, please. I have wireless internet and will give you the password upon arrival. There is a huge library that spills over into three rooms and you are welcome to read (not take with you!) any volume that interests you. I also subscribe to many magazines, so reading material is plentiful. Wineglasses, ice and bottle openers are available downstairs and may be used in your room or elsewhere in the house or grounds. I provide clean towels and have soap and shampoo for your use. Each room has a zoned dial on the radiator to control heat in the winter. There are window air conditioners in the summer months. If you need a box fan (for white noise), I can provide one. With advance warning for a fee, I may even be able to give you an art lesson--painting, collage or clay! Just let me know of your interest.
