Like the Siren's Song of old, this romantic version of a New England ship captain’s home will "forever call you home." Nestled in the hills of historic Machiasport and overlooking Machias Bay, our 1840s Cape Cod with sweeping ocean views was recently renovated by an architectural historian and combines stunning historical nods with practical modern amenities. It is a perfect "base camp" for exploring the rugged coastlines and natural wonders of the Bold Coast of Maine. Just 30 minutes from the Canadian border allows adventurous travelers (with passports) to explore the coastline even further north. For those who want to stay local, both land and sea are your (metaphorical and literal) oyster, as Siren's Song is within minutes of some of the most beautiful natural wonders Maine has to offer. And after a day (or seven) of exploring, Siren’s Song will call you home, where you can relax in front of the fire (either outdoors or indoors – or both), or take in the sunrise with a view. You have access to the full home, as well as the grounds, which includes a working pond, apple orchard and acre+ for hiking and wandering. The home is across the street from public access to Machias Bay. We have a wonderful caretaker who is available 24/7 throughout your stay; his contact information will be provided in the welcome manual emailed at confirmation. He can help with everything from where to find a spare light bulb in the house to which lobster place offers the best take-out. Siren's Song is part of Machiasport's historical community, just steps from beach and boat access. People often stay in Machiasport as a "base camp" for exploring -- we are just 30 minutes from the Canadian Border to the north, 75 minutes to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park to the south, and in close proximity to both puffin and whale watching tours. And, of course, no trip to Down East would be complete without lobsters! Public transportation is extremely limited -- you will want to plan on having a car. Most guests drive up the Bold Coast to our destination from the major airports (Boston Logan International airport is my personal favorite: inexpensive flights, easy car rental and then a 4.5 hour drive up the beautiful coast of Maine (antiquing and adventure spots galore!)! A note about the driveway: the location for Siren's Song is dramatic -- it is carved into the middle of a hill, and as such, the driveway is partially obscured. We recommend guests simply stop briefly in the Congregational Church parking lot (directly across the street from our location), and assess the driveway. It's quite easy once you know where it is, but many a person has overshot it on their way down the hill! On air conditioning -- though it is rarely necessary in downeast Maine due to its proximity to the Atlantic, we do have one window unit in the upstairs for cooling the upper level during the day. We do not have central air.
