Renovated two-bedroom, two bath, 1,000 s.f. 1908 cottage with Bay of Fundy views from the deck and bedrooms and gas fireplace. Cook's kitchen. 2 miles to Roosevelt's summer cottage on Campobello. Tranquil but convenient. For musical folks there's a good quality, in tune, upright piano. Everything is super clean and uncluttered.. If you are interested in a long-term rental during the winter months, please let us know. This approximately 1,000 s.f. 1908 cottage was rescued from the ravages of time. Left dilapidated, it has been restored from the ground up. Literally! The house was tipped up on jacks, one side of the basement scooped out and replaced and then tipped the other way. Like careening a boat. Everything is done on the inside - the landscaping is neat and tidy but plants are still making a new life for themselves - some with considerable success! Everything in the house is new. There are two bedrooms upstairs, one medium sized with ensuite shower room and a smaller one using the hall bath - both have good closets and a capacious dresser. Linens include high quality sheets, plenty of pillows and blankets and charming comforters. The living room is graced by a vented gas fireplace for snuggling up on cool evenings and there is a good quality upright piano that is kept in tune for that obligatory soiree musicale. The modern IKEA kitchen is open to the dining room and sunroom. The owner is a keen cook and the kitchen is equipped with everything you need - including lethally-sharp, high-quality chef's knives (joy of joys). Egress to the large deck is via a YOOGE sliding glass door from the dining room and the Bay of Fundy is visible a few hundred yards away. Deck furniture completes the ambiance. The sunroom window seat converts to a comfy queen-sized bed (IKEA Valentuna sectional) and can also be used as two narrow singles. There is no air-conditioning because coastal Maine is generally cool and even chilly - even in summer. There is separately controlled electric baseboard or fan heat in the bedrooms and bathrooms and a large space heater downstairs can kick in if the fireplace isn't sufficient. Hot water is a tankless system with plenty of capacity for a long hot shower or bath. Everything. Basement is used only for storage and its low ceiling makes it require extreme caution moving around to avoid head bumps. Guests are welcome to use the staples they find in the kitchen and to restock from the supplies in the laundry nook and the basement for paper goods and other needs. Cathie.meetre@tripleteq.com 301-655-7008 The grocery store is about 200 yards away and Lubec has several restaurants. The brew pub operates Thursday through Saturday - often with excellent live music. Lobsters are inexpensive and very good. Lubec rewards the walker - though its big hill requires some puff. The local library is a haven of books and tranquility and open to visitors. Bring your passport - Canada is across the bridge and the Roosevelt summer cottage is a must see - the border is open to those who are vaccinated but you must do an online registration first. Check the internet for details. The town has few tourist shops - a potter and a yarn shop plus a small gift shop are about it. The Summer keys program in town (back this year after two years cancelled due to Covid) hosts 30 to 50 amateur adult musicians weekly June-August. There is a professional concert every Wednesday and a student concert on Friday. Both are entertaining, though for different reasons. There are also many rewarding hikes in the area. Bikes and kayaks can be rented locally. By using summer ferries you can island hop to Prince Edward Island or the ferry to Newfoundland. Why Horror Hill? We wish we knew! But there are some stories... There is no public transportation by road. A shuttle service operates from Bangor Airport to Whiting, 13 miles away - then it's a taxi to town. Cycling is a good way to get around but better off the main road. Campobello, across the bridge (bring your passport) has numerous 'carriage roads' that are bike-friendly and carry little or no motor traffic. The ferries take bikes and allow for scenic island hopping. The ferry from Campobello Island to Deer Island and onward to the mainland both also take cars (though not many at a time). The house has offstreet parking. Most cell phones do not work well in Lubec (exception is US Cellular) and tend to switch back and forth between US and Canadian towers (also switching times) and sometimes getting international roaming rates. Texting generally works. We have provided a house phone for your convenience while here. It is not a smart phone and works only within the house, but it has unlimited calling within the US and Canada. Note: the sound insulation from one bedroom to another is not particularly good.
