Don’t let the name fool you—The Chicken House is one of the most beloved and spacious buildings at Farm by the Lake. Built on the original foundation of the homestead’s chicken coop, this cabin has been transformed into a bright, airy, and open-concept retreat. Features a private loft, a wood stove for atmosphere, and a curated library of books and a piano. Ideal for writers, musicians, or families looking for a unique "story" to tell about their vacation. The space It is the perfect home base for large families, creative workshops, or groups of friends seeking a communal atmosphere. The heart of the cabin is the expansive main room, featuring high ceilings, a cozy wood-burning stove, and a piano—perfect for evening singalongs or quiet reflection. Large windows frame the surrounding forest, making you feel immersed in the woods even while you’re lounging on the sofa. Sleeping Arrangements (Sleeps 9) Flexible Layout: The cabin features multiple sleeping nooks and bedrooms designed for versatility. Beds: A mix of full-size and twin beds ensures everyone has a comfortable spot to rest after a day on the trails. Kitchen & Dining Communal Dining: A large dining table sits at the center of the cabin, designed for long conversations over shared meals. Full Kitchen: Equipped with a stove, oven, refrigerator, and microwave, plus all the cookware you need to feed a full house. The "Unplugged" Experience While we do offer basic Wi-Fi for your convenience, The Chicken House is designed for connection with people, not screens. Step out the back door and follow the private path directly down to the shores of Lake Lomond for a morning paddle or a sunset view. 
This cabin is a “Housekeeping Cabin”. This means that if you stay for more than a day you will have to do some cleaning yourself, we do not come in and clean until you leave. Follow instructions posted on refrigerator for general housekeeping during your stay. Upon leaving we do expect all garbage to be removed from cabin and put into nearby dumpster, sweep floors, clean and put away dirty dishes, empty refrigerator of unused food, and remove sheets from used beds and place in pillow cases. Guest access Your 80-Acre Playground When you stay at the Log Cabin, you aren't just renting a room—you are gaining access to the entire Farm by the Lake grounds. We encourage you to wander, explore, and breathe in the fresh northern air. Included with your stay: Lake Lomond Access: Head down to the private dock where a community canoe is available for your use (seasonal). It’s the perfect way to spot the local loons or enjoy a sunrise paddle. Nature Trails: Three miles of maintained trails wind through the property. In the summer, they are perfect for hiking and birdwatching; in the winter, we groom them for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Shared Spaces: You are welcome to use the large community picnic shelter, the outdoor fire pits (perfect for s'mores!), and the charcoal grills provided at each cabin. Wildlife Viewing: Keep your eyes on the "picture windows"—it is very common to see "friendly wildlife," including deer and bald eagles, right outside your door. Other things to note We are a mission-driven non-profit. We are a "Housekeeping Cabin." To keep our rates low and support our non-profit mission, we do not provide daily maid service. We ask our guests to act as stewards of the cabin by removing their own trash, sweeping the floors, and pulling the sheets before checkout.
