There are dozens and dozens of small local restaurants, and lots of local novelty shops. It's the kind of town where you'll feel safe walking around at night. The town is largely unchanged for the last 60 years, where my husband and his brother walked all around town, unsupervised, when they were only 6 or 7 years old. Santa Barbara and Ventura are 15-20 minutes away, so you have lots of large restaurants and things to do just a short drive away. The town is easily walkable and you'll see tons of people enjoying riding their bicycles all around town. There's also a local trolly that drives around town all day long and costs 50 cents to ride. It's also convenient to drive your car when you prefer not to walk. There is also an Amtrak depot about 3 blocks from the apartment, making it possible to visit Carpinteria without a car.
