Description

STEP BACK IN TIME…when you visit the J.R. Chapman house in the Downtown Historic District of Roseburg, Oregon. Built c.1903 by noted Dentist, Dr. John Russell Chapman, this Craftsman bungalow has an ambiance found only in homes with history. The home is furnished with mostly vintage decor. Located on 3/4 of an acre within walking distance of some of Roseburg’s finest restaurants, pubs, shops, the DC Courthouse & the Roseburg Library. We invite you to experience the charm of the Chapman house. The space Born in 1869 to Oregon pioneers George and Eliza Chapman, John Russell Chapman was raised in Douglas County before attending Washington University in St. Louis Missouri where he graduated Dental school in 1902. There, he specialized in dental surgery for a short time before his health prevented him from staying. He returned to Douglas County and began practicing general dentistry in 1903 and presumably built this house. Dr. Chapman married Mary Louise McCabe in 1921 and passed away in 1936. The Chapman house has witnessed and survived much in it’s 115+ years. The house next door burned down in the 1970’s and now the lot provides off street parking for houseguests. You will find many of the original windows with their wavy glass, remarkably having survived the Roseburg Blast of 1959. A relative of the McLaughlin Family who lived here in the 1960’s, shared a story about his mother shooting a buck in the back yard out the window of the back bedroom. Dr. Chapman built this house with central heating (and now the addition of air-conditioning) so apparently no fireplace was needed. It also was built with indoor plumbing and the bathroom still has the original sink & clawfoot bathtub. In the breakfast nook, you will find a collection of bottles and other treasures we have found through the years while gardening as well as an early model car wheel located in the garden. If stairs are an issue, I should mention that there are several stairs to reach the front door as well as the back. And, all three bedrooms as well as the full bath are on the second floor. The full kitchen is stocked with dishes, pots and pans, coffee beans, tea, cocoa. I am a lover, collector and dealer of antiques and so, as much as possible, the house has been decorated with vintage items from my inventory (most are available for purchase). Located (1) mile from I-5 and close to downtown Roseburg, you will be within walking distance of some of Roseburg’s finest restaurants & pubs as well as shops, churches, the Roseburg Library & the Douglas County Courthouse. We are located in the heart of the Umpqua Valley Wine Country with more than 25 Winery’s welcoming visitors. For more information, visit umpquavalleywineries.org. Other attractions include: Wildlife Safari (10 miles); Award-winning Douglas County Museum of Cultural & Natural History (3 miles); Numerous parks on the North & South Umpqua rivers; the Oregon coast 75-95 miles depending on route taken; Umpqua National Forest; Crater Lake (98 miles); Diamond Lake (80 miles). There are countless opportunities to experience the great outdoors including waterfall hikes, road & mountain biking, swimming, rafting/kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing & hunting as well as summer outdoor concerts. We have had the privilege of loving and caring for this piece of history for 19 years now and invite you to experience the charm and ambiance of the J.R. Chapman house.
