Charming and cozy wilderness log cabin
Adirondack styled & chinked-red pine 3-level cabin (1,800 sq. ft.) on 6.6 acres surrounded by 1,700 acres of county forest in the great North Woods. Beautifully furnished/decorated with comfy quality furniture...curl up under an Afghan! Private niches and libraries surround you. Amazing staircases of branches and wood planks. A treasure of lamps, clocks and artwork. A fire crackling. Peacefulness, quiet, escape. Amazing sunsets over the lake. Night stars that will knock your socks off. The space Correction and clarification! This cabin has 4 beds that can sleep 6, not 6 beds, as the title declares. And bedroom 3, which is the same as the living room 2, (which is on the lower level) has the two single beds in it. My accuracy is somewhat dictated by the Airbnb logarithm and for the life of me, I can't figure out how to make the correction on the title! We welcome you to this unique, breath-taking and clearly beloved cabin on Devil's Lake. (Wisconsin has 5 Devil's Lakes - we are the smallest) At aged 21 years old, the cabin is nestled in the natural ridges created by glaciers surrounding a 27-acre lake, sitting on 6.6 acres of hills and manicured woods, and then surrounded by another 1,700 acres of county forest. We have expansive views south, west and north with over 600 feet of shoreline. Full-spread articles regarding our cabin & sauna were published in the Minneapolis Star Tribune "Cabin Country" series in 2014 ("Growing Old with the Cabin"); 2016 ("A Place to Bake, Chat and Laugh"); and in 2020 ("In a New Role and Aging Well"). Coming down our private driveway, your first sight is the image of a farmhouse-styled cabin with golden hued walls of aged pine slabs. The cabin has 1,200 sq. feet of decks and porches that surround the entire structure. At dusk or early evening, copper-hammered lights on posts will help you light your path to our front door. A delightful cathedral ceiling with fan in the enclosed south-exposure porch provides seating for 4-6. 4 Adirondack chairs face the lake on the deck and 2 wicker side chairs sit in the NE corner facing a beautiful valley of woods (another ceiling fan). A fire pit with stacked firewood is just down the hill from the cabin. The wood-burning, Finnish-styled sauna is just north of the cabin and has its own enclosed section of specially cut aged, stacked wood. A traditional Finnish-styled cooling room with artwork is lit by candlelight. A Weber 3-burner propane grill available on the lake-side deck. Best to be used in moderate cool weather. When the hard winter cold settles in, we recommend not using since it will just not get hot enough to cook your food. The overall wilderness area has been carefully cleared to maximize the view of the lake while maintaining the privacy and natural beauty that attracted us to this area. Going inside, you immediately notice the amazing, beamed ceiling, the grand French-styled Country Grandfather long case clock, and the smell of wood. (There is no sheet rock in the entire cabin.) A large working kitchen of Granite countertops & Hickory cabinets is part of the Great Room with huge windows, oak-planked floors and warmed by a great corner wood-burning stove. The kitchen is fully equipped and well-stocked with a great gas cooking stove and other quality appliances. Basic food staples are provided. High table seating has 4 highchairs with backs and 2 stools. The table cannot be expanded. The great room has a 75-inch TV. Expansive southern and western views of Devil's Lake and forests. Great comfy furniture (leather and fabric) with several Tiffany-styled lamps. World travel and art/architecture coffee table books are in bookshelves at every level. The cabin has plenty of cozy corners to escape with a book or for a nap. Card and board games are ready for your use. Lower-level living room provides another great conversational or escape space. Great overstuffed chairs and couch, a 50-inch TV/smart DVD; and 2 single adult-sized day beds. (also referred to in the ad as a "bedroom 3". Separate HVAC system, separate full bathroom (tub/shower), ceiling fan, separate entrance, and view of the western woods and lake. Outside is an old sandstone patio that leads to the lake, sauna and the outdoor shower. (Sorry, but the outdoor shower is shut down completely during the rental months due to the chance of freezing pipes.) Coming up the stunning open staircase made of wood slabs and branches, you come to the upstairs loft perfectly designed for reading or late-night chatter. The primary bedroom is quite large with its own sitting area (no TV), ceiling fan, king-sized bed and lamps everywhere. Sliding doors open out to the 2nd floor deck. 2nd upstairs bedroom has a 32-inch TV and the ability to add your fire stick, a queen-sized bed, ceiling fan. It also has sliding doors opening up to the 2nd floor deck. All 3 bathrooms have tubs/showers, granite countertops and stunning vessel sinks & fixtures. All beds provided are of top-quality with premium cushion-topped springs and mattresses for superior comfort. All pillows are encased with sanitary liners. Down towards the lake, a new 20 foot by 14-foot platform sits perched looking over the lake. Please note that this is not a deck since it purposely has no railings. Thus, only adults should utilize it; it would be considered dangerous for children. Take a walk along the moss-covered path in the fall and spring, through the leaves of the oak, maple and birch trees in all their autumn glory, along the snow-covered woods in the winter, and in the spring, over the emerging flora of the North-woods. Listen for bullfrogs, songbirds, owls, and loons. Watch for wildlife, especially for eagles, otters, wood chucks and beavers. Sighting of bear, deer, bobcats, and wild turkeys aren't unusual, and enjoy and peace and quiet of this private lake from the deck, the dock or the lawn chair. This Wisconsin retreat is 13 miles from downtown Hayward; 9 miles from Stone Lake and 45 miles from Rice Lake. (Hayward has been voted to have one of America's most beautiful main streets with delightful shops and restaurants.) PLEASE NOTE: Winter advisory for late October - early May...we recommend strongly that you have front-wheel or all-wheel drive, as Wolf Lane can get icy. While our plow service is excellent, it may not be timely or enough to save you if hit with a blizzard or an unexpected storm. If stuck, you will need to hire your own tow truck. Two pair of men's sized snowshoes are available for your use. (located behind the bathroom door on the main level.) There is plenty of space on the decks for your coolers, suitcases or other equipment. Please do not move furniture as it will scratch the floors. And please, no guns allowed on the property. The nights here are super dark. No lights. Wonderful dark from sunset on. But with sunrise, light pours into the 2 bedrooms on the top floor. If you require a totally darkened sleeping space beyond sunrise, the only sleep area to promise you darkness is located in the lower level. The upper 2 bedrooms cannot be darkened. As guests remark, what is described is exactly what you'll find. We offer you clean, comfortable accommodations, a quiet lakefront location, and an invitation to make yourself at home and enjoy the sights, sounds and peacefulness of the North Woods. Check out the special link for the Cozy Cabin listed on this site profile! Copy and paste this on your electronic device for quick reference and for future bookings!!!! Guest access Steps, with railings, are everywhere, outside and inside. This is not an accessible cabin. Sorry. Other things to note Here are some questions we get asked: Can we ice fish? You probably would not be successful, since we are just starting to stock it with game fish. Also, the ice is thin and can be dangerous due to our lake aerator that we have 100 feet from our dock. Can we cross-country ski? Yes! We will give you a listing of local groomed trails. Most of them are at least 13 miles away. Can we wax our skis in your utility room? No. Can we snowshoe or just hike? Yes! We have great logging trails everywhere right outside our door. And we have 2 pairs of snowshoes you can use. Can we snowmobile? The closest trails for snowmobiling are about 10 miles away. And you are not able to get there from this cabin without utilizing a trailer. And seriously, your snowmobile trailer may easily get stuck on our hill coming to the cabin. We discourage this activity. Can we burn wood in a fire pit outside? Yes! The pit (circle) is located on the west side of the cabin between the cabin and the lake. Fire pit wood is already stacked and available. Can we hunt at your cabin? No. Hunting season will be over and no firearms are allowed in the cabin. PLEASE...AGAIN....NO GUNS! Will our phones work at the cabin? Service in the woods can be inconsistent; we find that Samsung and IPhones work well. There is a Verizon tower north of Hayward. Can we bring our pets or a service/assistance animal? No. We know that animal hair and dander can irritate some renters with allergies and this will increase our cleaning costs. Can we smoke or vape? In warmer months, no, not at all. During colder months, we will allow smoking outside ONLY on the deck with our cabin windows shut. No butts thrown in the woods. All cold ash remains need to be sealed in a baggie before disposing in our waste basket. Can we invite friends over for a gathering? No, Airbnb and your host expressly does not allow such gatherings. Can we bring our kids? We prefer them to be over 12 and they need to be counted as part of the overall guest count. Can we use the sauna? The wood burning sauna is available to only those who can prove to work a sauna of this type safely. People that are pregnant or have heart conditions should not use the sauna. We will need to chat/text and you will need to convince me that you will be a safe and responsible steward of the sauna, since it can be considered dangerous. Can we drink your well water? Yes! We have it professionally checked annually. Our summer 2022 testing with Clean Water Testing of Appleton, Wisconsin, found no Coli-form or E-coli bacteria. Other details: No ice-maker. No garbage disposal. No outdoor boots or shoes inside. No coffee or tea provided. A standard drip coffee pot only. Filters are provided. No glitter or glue based children's projects please. No yoga or "business" retreats for profit allowed. PLEASE dump grease in the frig grease pot. Apple Music Home-pod located on the main level.
