Butterfly Cottage Sunbird Hill, Kibale Forest edge
Butterfly Cottage at Sunbird Hill, Kibale Forest edge operates entirely on solar energy. It has its own garden within my daughter's 40 acre estate adjacent to Kibale National Park. Julia is a primatologist who spent over 5 years habituating and studying the chimpanzees there. The chimps are not aware of the forest boundary, of course, and often visit Julia's land - especially when the fig trees are fruiting. There is an abundance of birds, butterflies and other interesting creatures. The space Butterfly Cottage at Sunbird Hill is elevated - with stunning views over Kibale National Park. It has a large deck - ideal for sundowners! There is a flush toilet and warm shower inside. There is a comfortable double bed (or two singles) enclosed 'walls' and 'roof' made of purple cotton material which also acts as a mozzie net. It also has a mezzanine floor where two single beds/mattresses are available. It has a fridge containing cold beverages. As the electrical system is mainly 12v, charging electronic devices is simple as there are ample 'car charger' USB points. Apart from hearing the chimps nesting or de-nesting (they can be quite noisy) wild elephants often pass by. Their rumbling stomachs can sometimes be heard as they crash through the trees and undergrowth. Guest access My daughter, Julia, runs a nature site with local experts at Sunbird Hill. This is adjacent to the forest which attracts a rich diversity of birds, butterflies and other creatures - both big (elephants) and small (insects, reptiles, amphibians & mammals). The Birders Lounge is a large thatched building that is the hub for professional local and overseas birders. Guests are welcome to join Sunbird Hill's Nature Club on their regular Saturday morning walk where a small team of local enthusiasts monitor the birds and butterflies. Other creatures will also be pointed out to you - accompanied by interesting titbits of natural history information. What cannot be identified is photographed by the team then searched for through the library back at The Birders Lounge with tea and snacks (perfect spot for armchair birding and photography). You will also find on site bird baths, a pond, bird hide and a boardwalk across a small wetland. Other things to note Breakfast and a guided walk at Sunbird Hill is included in the price. As well as all-day access to The Birders Lounge with constant supply of hot water for tea, drinking water and local snacks. An equipped communal camp kitchen is available on site behind The Birders Lounge just a few minutes walk from Butterfly Cottage. Our location is about 3 km from Kanyanchu Tourist Centre (300 m as the sunbird flies!) where tourists participate in the Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale National Park (Permits are available from the Uganda Wildlife Authority). In the other direction (again, about 3 kms away) is the local trading centre, Bigodi. Here can be found The Bee Hive Bar & Bistro - a pleasant watering hole offering good food, cold drinks, cable TV and a decent pool table. Takeaways can be delivered for a modest charge.
