River View Cottage
Description
Set in an acre of land in a secluded position between Ardara and Glenties, looking over the Owenea river towards the mountains of mid-Donegal, this unspoilt traditional cottage has a log/turf fire and oil fired range, gas cooker, fridge, shower and bath. The river is popular with salmon fishermen and walkers and West Donegal's spectacular beaches and hill country are within easy reach, as are many excellent restaurants, pubs and intriguing touring destinations. The space This charming, traditional cottage was built about 150 years ago, entirely of local stone. Since then, the original two rooms have been extended by adding a kitchen and bathroom. It is surrounded by peaceful, rolling landscape and the Owenea river which winds its way through fields which lie beyond the garden. The house is steeped in history, from stories of local ‘poochers’ who took fish from the river, regarding it as their right, to the history of the McDevitt family who raised eight children there, mainly on subsistence farming, which was the norm in rural Ireland at the time. The importance of the nearby river in providing vital extra food, can be appreciated. Fishing, surfing, golf, hiking, horse riding, spectacular, clean beaches and a truly stunning coastline are all within reach. Ardara, minutes away, has a formidable calendar of festivals and is a paradise for the traditional music lover. A list of local sessions and eateries is provided in the house manual on arrival. The house has one bedroom with a double bed, a central living room and then a kitchen and bathroom, all in a typical linear arrangement. The main door at the back opens into the living room. The heating is from an oil-fired range and a real fire, located in the bedroom. A 'starter amount' of turf and firewood are included in the rental, after which guests are asked to supply their own. The kitchen has a gas cooker, fridge, table, chairs and sink. It is equipped for cooking and there is a toaster and microwave. The bathroom has a bath tub and shower, toilet and wash hand basin. As it has been our family retreat for over twenty years, we ask guests to respect the choices we have made and remember that we have aimed at comfort without wishing to loose so many traditional features which remind us of the life this cottage once held within its walls. Pets are not encouraged for the simple reason that we are surrounded by sheep and introducing dogs to the area is just too troublesome. As we are non-smokers, we ask that guests refrain from smoking indoors. We have owned this cottage for the past 20 years. We have deliberately kept it as near to its original condition and retained as many original features as possible, while ensuring the comfort and relaxation required for an enjoyable and memorable stay Guest access The entire house and garden
