Cabin in Petersburg
Description
Time travel to 1958 in this architectural gem! This mid-century modern glass and wood cabin is 300 yards away from a charming small lake. The house is NOT on the lake itself, but it is surrounded by trees in a lovely secluded spot. The only heat is a wood stove... but there is a 4-person cedar barrel sauna in the woods that is electric. A classic 1952 Spartanette travel trailer serves as an extra bedroom. This is a true retreat for romance and adventure. The space Wake up surrounded by oak, beech and maple. Lots of glass and no curtains (don't choose this if you are worried about raccoons seeing you naked.) The house is raised about six feet off the ground - my kids call it "The Tree House." (Not actually in a tree, but feels like it.) This may be the finest standing build of a George Matsumoto "Vacation Cabin" -- the plans for which were published in a Women's Day magazine back in 1958. You can see pics of this house on the US modernist website, which is dedicated to the preservation of notable mid-century architecture. A 1952 Spartanette Tandem travel trailer makes for another unique space from that post-war moment of optimism. A bit more on the contemporary side are the large cedar barrel sauna and rustic plunge pool, nestled in the woods 100 yards from the house. The sauna is electric and 8KW, so it warms up quickly. The house itself is only two rooms plus bathroom. An open plan kitchen and living area with a twin bed make up the 'main house' and a separate bunk house has three single beds. The bunk house and main house are connected by a deck. Its all very small, but too big to be called a tiny house. There is also a rear deck with outdoor shower and fire pit. There are some musical instruments that hang on the walls and an electric piano tucked in under the countertop. There is a wood stove for heat. We provide wood for the stove. Note that number of guests says "5" but it probably works best for two adults with up to three kids. Five adults would be very crowded by normal American standards. You can get two couples in comfortably by using the Spartanette trailer bedroom, but note that it is a 70 year old trailer -that has only been lightly restored, so don't expect it to smell like a new one. Its a little like grandma's house in there. Guest access There is enough space to park 3 cars comfortably on the property. Careful heading up and down the driveway, the Oak trees that flank the driveway have taken a beating before and they are tired of being bumped into. Other things to note Boats from outside are not allowed on this lake. The lake association has strict rules to prevent invasive species. You can bring boats to use on the many nearby lakes that allow outside boats, but not at this lake. There are some boats also available at the nearby Grafton Lakes State Park for rent during the summer season. I have a canoe that you can use that is parked down by the Dam, 300 yards away. It has paddles in it, you will need to flip it over and put it in the water. The canoe is the only one on the dam that has a mouth and teeth! You can't miss it if you amble over there. There are also a couple of bikes you can use.
