Description
Perfect for groups of 4-13, the 1834 House is a spacious and breathtaking home 10 min from Athens and 40 min from the Hocking Hills. Unlike others which host larger groups by squeezing beds into small spaces, this spacious home offers comfortable luxury and room to spread out. It has 2 living rooms, gourmet kitchen, vaulted ceilings, luxurious master bedroom, large porches & patio, fire ring and spectacular lawns. On 77 acres, you will enjoy our 4 ponds, fishing and hiking trails. The space The 1834 House offers the best of both worlds - close proximity to Athens combined with a gorgeous country retreat! This historic home is so close to Athens that it is perfect for those attending OU events, but it is also ideal for those who desire a country weekend get-a-way or longer vacation rental. The 77 acres of fields, forests, ponds and walking trails will provide hours of adventure for outdoor enthusiasts and families with children. The proximity to the Hocking Hills (an easy 35-40 min drive -26 miles- to Old Man's Cave) and other area attractions will suit those looking to explore the unique offerings of this region. Originally built in 1834, this home has a beautiful fireplace of local sandstone, restored oak and pine flooring and lots of country charm. In 2009 a recent owner modernized and renovated the home, adding a large addition with a gorgeous master suite, additional downstairs bedroom, a spacious living room, gourmet kitchen, sunny dining area, and patio with screened porch. Furnished with a blend of antiques and more modern pieces, every bed is comfortable and living spaces lend themselves to relaxing in comfort. A 43 inch television is housed in a beautiful antique wardrobe in the main living room, but if you prefer, you can retreat to the historic living room where the gas fireplace sets the stage for quiet conversation or just relaxing with a good book. Each bedroom is unique and comfortable. The master bedroom boasts a king bed and spacious master bath. The downstairs bedroom is just outside the master bedroom and has a full size bed. This room would be suitable for adults or kids - toddler rails and a crib are both available. In the corner of this room, you will find a bookshelf with toddler safe toys and plenty of children's books. The downstairs bedroom guests can either use the master bathroom or the downstairs half bathroom. The two upstairs bedrooms are spacious and share a bathroom with claw-foot tub and shower. Whether you make your own meals or simply pick up take-out from Athens, you will feel at home in the kitchen / dining areas. The kitchen is stocked with basics for your use - spices, flower and sugar, cooking oil, tea, coffee maker and filters. A large farmhouse table with six chairs provides for family style meals in the dining area. If additional seating is desired, there are three seats at the kitchen island and an extra dining table for 4 is also available. The gas grill and out-door seating will make cook-outs a snap. The large lawn in the back is perfect for croquet, badminton, kite flying or simply star gazing. Guest access The house is all yours during your stay, so enjoy your privacy, but know that we are on the property almost daily, feeding the ducks and geese and walking our friendly dogs. Fishing ponds (3 of them) and fields surround the farmhouse, with beautiful lush forests. You are welcome to explore the whole property, and blazed trails are generally easy to follow and a map of the trails is provided for you to use. An old rail-road bed runs the length of the property and is great for those who desire walking on flat ground or have a baby in a big wheel stroller. Sometimes friends and family join us for hiking, ice-skating, sledding, swimming, fishing, or bird watching, so you may run into us as we also enjoy the property. Other things to note While the house is in perfect shape for guests, we have some ongoing projects on the grounds, so please forgive any works in progress! The brick-work which runs around the front of the house is slated to be replaced and some of the bricks are loose - please be careful. The two ponds closest to the house are fenced in, but Lilly Pad Pond and Upper Pond (which are a few minutes walk from the house) are not fenced, so young children must be supervised to ensure their safety. Outdoor adventures come with the usual risks of enjoying nature - bee stings, poison ivy, ticks, and twisted ankles, to name a few. We suggest long pants if you are walking in the fields or forest. Using bug spray can help prevent mosquito and tick bites. Its a good idea to know how to identify poison ivy, so you don't walk through a patch of it. Do bring good walking shoes or boots, as some of the trails are muddy.
