Martin House is a comfortable guest house at Happiness Hills Farm, a farm & retreat center in the Appalachian foothills near historic Berea, Kentucky. It's perfect for couples, families, & groups who want to enjoy each other's company in a beautiful setting. The Martin House is designed to feel like a home, with two private bedrooms, a great room, full kitchen, and a "Grandma's Attic" space with six single beds. Bringing a pet? Just let us know - there's a small pet fee that Airbnb calculates. When you're sitting on the balcony with a cup of fresh coffee or tea, looking across the sloping lawn toward the hammocks and the bridge across the Red Lick Creek, time seems to stand still and peace washes over you. At least that's what we hear from folks who stay here, and what we experience every morning at our home, just up the hill from the Martin House. The Martin House lodging area on the second and third floors is completely private - you'll have your own door lock code and once you're inside, the space is entirely yours. On the ground floor is a common area that houses laundry facilities, additional bathrooms, and a full kitchen. You might see other visitors and farm residents in that area, which has a separate outdoor entrance. Outside the house, you'll be sharing the wide open spaces with other guests and the Escobar family. You're welcome to enjoy the creek, the lawns, the walking trails, the chapel, the campfire area, and our 10-acre lake, along with the rest of us - we welcome you! Hi! We're Alfredo & Jennifer Escobar and our daughters, Lydia and Isabel, and we love to interact with our guests. Alfredo is a visual artist and Jennifer is a musician and dancer. Alfredo's murals and other paintings can be seen in Berea and other cities throughout the eastern USA. Jennifer has recorded more than 10 albums, several of which can be found on iTunes, and she's involved with two student folk dance groups: The Berea Festival Dancers (of which Lydia and Isabel are members) and The Berea College Country Dancers. We're homeschoolers, and are often called upon to work as arts education consultants through state arts councils and the Kentucky Department of Education. On any given day you may find us doing schoolwork at home, working on the farm or buildings, or out and about in the world doing our arts thing and trying to make life fuller for everyone we meet. Guests who stay with us usually enjoy their stay more when they're interested in interacting with us - we love to recommend activities, share stories, and have even been known to collaborate on meals with our guests. We're located in the Red Lick Valley, near the foot of Pilot Knob, where legend has it that Daniel Boone was inspired to write, "I had gained the summit of a commanding ridge, and, looking round with astonishing delight, beheld the ample plains, the beauteous tracts below." Farms and small housing developments dot the valley landscape, and the lush Appalachian foothills surround us on all sides. Our entrance is directly off US Highway 421, 7 miles from Berea College and 12 miles from the Eastern Bypass in Richmond. There's no regular public transportation out here in the countryside, but taxis are available and we've been known to give people rides now and again. We are committed to a healthy earth, and we want our retreat center to do its part. We ask our guests to join us in separating food waste (we'll compost it for you) and recycling (we'll deliver it to the local center), and we promise to plant a tree on the farm for each booking of five nights or more.
