Tasso Island Eco-lodges -Freetown's Nature Park
"Tasso lies at the heart of one of Africa's most precious wetlands - the Sierra Leone River Estuary." (Travel Weekly) - but it is only 90 minutes from Freetown and Lungi irport (by boat). Kissy Camp and Beach Resort is a community-based ecotourism camp set in the coastal forest with its own beach. Large wooden and canvas chalets (6) have beach-side views. We also have a bunk barn and tents for back-packers and school parties. A great place to start or finish a holiday in Sierra Leone! Each chalet is two minutes walk from the Baobab Restaurant - a beautiful timber and grass roofed structure built round a 100 year old Baobab Tree. There are walks to three villages, canoe trips to the Mangrove Forest and safe swimming from the beach. Our guests have complete freedom to access all parts of the camp (except the kitchen and staff quarters). Our site managers and support team are on duty 24 hours a day. Boat crossings operate during daylight hours from Freetown, Lungi (Tagrin) and Pepel by prior arrangement. In order to book your crossing please submit your accommodation request 48 hours before travelling For late evening and night flights we recommend that our guests stop over at the Airport Lodge Motel ( see airb&b) 5 minutes from the airport terminal. Dean, Lorraine, Savo, and Michael will look after you really well! Tasso Island has a rich history and culture. It was once used as a slave plantation. We organise trips, daily, to the neighbouring Bunce Island Fortress which is the most complete 18th century slave fort in West Africa. More details appear on www.tassoisland.org To get to Tasso there are several options: We run our boat, the Gladi-Gladi, on demand from Freetown Ferry Terminal (call at the Canteen). Cost of the return trip is 150$ (for up to 10 passengers). We also arrange private speedboat crossings to the Island (see the website for details). Public boats cross from Tagrin to Tasso Town at 15.00 hours and return at 09.00 ( Cost less than 10$). You can walk (1 hour) or take an Okada (Motorbike ride -15 minutes) from Tasso Town to Kissy Camp.
