Oldonyo Orok House

Delightful 3 bedroom cottage set right at the foot of the spectacular 2,548m mountain forest reserve OlDonyo Orok. The property sits on 5 acres bordered by a seasonal river and the forest boundary and provides ample space for al fresco dining and other activities. Big skies, 180 degree mountain views, stunning sunsets and starry nights make this hidden gem a must visit. The space The main cottage has a fully equipped kitchen, two bedrooms each with a queen bed, living room, outdoor dining area, indoor shower and outdoor bathtub. A standalone cottage meters from the main cottage has an en suite master bedroom with a queen bed and an outdoor shower and bathtub The main rest area on the property includes: Gazebo for relaxing and dining with fully equipped outdoor kitchen, charcoal cooler, barrel grill, sauna and plunge pool, outdoor bonfire pit There is a manager on the property to assist you during your stay. . Guest access Getting There: The cottage is located approximately 5km from Maili Tisa. The road is graded however the last 1KM is a cleared track. During the wet season this section can be tricky and a 4WD or high-clearance vehicle is highly recommended. If there has been heavy precipitation in the area, please check in with us two days before arrival to inquire about the state of the road. Power Conservation: The property has solar power for internal as well as external security lights. There is enough reserve power to last 30 hrs with moderate use. There are 16 power outlets in the cottage, 4 in the stand-alone master bedroom, and 2 outlets in the gazebo. Your laptops, cell phones, portable speakers and powerbanks are good to go! High consumption electric devices such as kettles, toasters, sub-woofers, hairdryers, microwaves and blenders are not allowed. Drinking Water: Please make sure you bring enough drinking water with you, 10-15L recommended or alternatively boil the rain/borehole water from the taps. You can also purchase drinking water at Maili Tisa town. Connectivity: The wi-fi in the cottage is connected to Airtel and Safaricom and may be intermettent. Ammenities: There is a medium size fridge in the cottage, good for your beers, wines and chilled water. However, if you need to keep large amounts of food (eg a few KGs of frozen meats, frozen casseroles etc) we recommend you bring a cooler. There is also a large charcoal cooler in the outdoor kitchen area. Wood is available for bonfires @KES 500 per night. Local Markets: Maili Tisa market is a good place to buy fresh meat and locally grown vegetables. We are happy to recommend butcheries and vegetable stores as needed. Please talk to the manager at the cottage. Other things to note Things to do: Oldonyo Orok is a scenic mountain to climb (roughly 4 hours) and organized hikes to the summit are avialable at the KFS headquaters in Namanga. A stunning seasonal waterfall about 20 minutes up the mountain is directly accessible from the cottage and is a great hike that can be arranged with the manager. The general area around the cottage is flat and provides several kilometers of road and track perfect for casual biking during the dry season. There are wonderful rocky lookout spots great for meals and sundowners on Oldonyo Orok minutes from the cottage. Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru are visible on clear days especially in the morning. Ask the manager about breakfast, lunch or sundowners in one of these spots! Amboseli National Park is Africa's greatest elephant sanctuary and second mostvisited national park in Kenya, Amboseli is a must-do if you are in this area. Accessible via all-weather graded road from Namanga town, it is possible to leave the cottage early and spend the greater part of the day in the park before returning in the evening.
