Rusinga Island Sunset Homestay
Where are we? We are located in Rusinga Island, which is a small island in lake Victoria but connected to the mainland by a bridge. Mbita is the nearest town on the mainland and 8 km away from the homestead. The lake is always in sight and only a 5 minute walk away. On the island you will find mainly small farms with the families living either in the traditional mud huts or more modern brick houses. Several small villages are spread around the island, Kolunga Beach being the closest. The space Where will you stay? Sunset Homestay is beautiful and quiet place with a banana plantation, and vegetables and mangos being grown in the compound. The Homestay has five houses and three woodlots, which have been established in the compound making it so attractive for bird watching and providing shade. You will live together with our family in the same compound to hasten cultural exchange and to get the best experience sharing our daily life with us. The houses in the compound have different functions. One serves as the kitchen and the rest are for accommodation. Four of the buildings are built with bricks, with two of the roofs made of iron sheet and the other two being thatched. Those two cottages are so special in that they resemble African architecture and guests always enjoy staying in these traditional cottages most. You may enjoy being woken up by the morning birds and watch the sunrise from the cottage. The homestead also provides many places for you to relax, under the shades of the trees during the heat of the day or watching the sun set and the incredible night sky that is not yet interrupted by lights. Up to eight people can be accommodated at once in the 4 houses. There are four single rooms and two cottages which can be shared by two people each. The latrine is a composting toilet in a separate small hut at the side of the compound. There is no running water but water is being provided from the lake on a daily basis. Breakfast is included, but we also offer to provide lunch and dinner which can be joined by family members. We cook traditional meals using local produce as much as possible. You may not only get to taste authentic Kenyan dishes but also get the opportunity to join in cooking these dishes if you like to. The meals we then get to either enjoy in our living room or we set up the table in the woodlots under the trees. A booking at Sunset Homestay includes the offer of a free pick up and return to Mbita. Note: A stay at Sunset Homestead will cost 20 USD per night per person including breakfast. Additional meals for lunch and dinner can be prepared for 7 USD per person. Pick up and drop of to Mbita is for free. As well as tours around the island. Going out by boat can be arranged with the fishermen for some extra charge.
