Old-world colonial charm on every street corner combines the beauty of beautiful sandy beaches, making it one of the most desirable places to live in America. It's no wonder artists like Roy Lichtenstein, and Jackson Pollock found solace in Southampton's secluded shores. SOUTHAMPTON ATTRACTIONS A stunning mix of history and natural beauty forms a good part of Southampton's attraction. The picturesque nature of the area has long seduced painters, so it's no surprise that it has the Parrish Art Museum. Once located in the village, the museum was moved in 2012 to Water Mill, a suburb of Southampton. Founded in 1897 by Samuel Parrish, it has grown to include 3,000 works, many by masters like Willem De Kooning and Jackson Pollock. Those who want to learn more about Southampton's past should visit the Southampton Museum, which has exhibitions all year round and helps preserve colonial buildings like 'Halsey Homestead.' Built in 1660, it is the town's oldest residence. The history tour can continue at 'Conscience Point Historic Site and Nature Walk,' the site of the first landing by settlers in 1640. Naturally, you'll also want to visit the beach. Southampton has eleven of them spread over seven miles of extraordinary oceanfront. Cooper's Beach is one of the best, offering umbrellas and chair rentals to those looking to soak up the sun in comfort. SOUTHAMPTON SHOPPING Take a walk down Southampton's Main street, and you will take in old-fashioned storefronts and fashion boutiques like 'Alice & Olivia.' This stylish women's clothing brand offers designer wear that will keep you in style in the chic setting of Southampton. If interior design is more your thing, try 'Homenature.' It offers you the perfect place to furnish your beachfront property with unique designer furniture. Alternatively, you could visit 'Hildreth's Home Goods.' First established in 1842, it's America's oldest department store and stocks the largest selection of interior and exterior home furnishings in the Hamptons. Upscale fashion brands are also easy to find, with Ralph Lauren, James Perse, and J McLaughlin all having stores in the town. After all that shopping, you should relax a little by checking out one of Southampton's spas like the 'Geomare Wellness & Spa Center' where you can unwind and be pampered in a sophisticated and peaceful setting. SOUTHAMPTON RESTAURANTS 'Cowfish' is a stylish spot that pairs excellent seafood and sushi with canal views. You'll find a livelier scene at 'Oaklands Restaurant and Marina' where crowds come for the sunset, water views, and a classic, fish-centered menu. '75 Main Street' is a celebrated Hampton hangout that serves modern Italian in a chic and stylish environment. The upscale 'Red Bar Brasserie' marries locally sourced ingredients with a decidedly French influence to create a classic dining experience in its elegant surroundings. Those looking for a casual lunch should check out Blue Duck Bakery. It offers salads, soup, sandwiches and, of course, delicious homemade bread. SOUTHAMPTON NIGHTLIFE On the surface, Southampton seems like a quaint and sedate place, but come nightfall, there's plenty to entertain night owls. As its name suggests, ' AM Southampton' is a great place to dance from night till dawn in a chic urban environment. While 'Southampton Social Club' is a trendy restaurant and cocktail bar by day that transforms itself into a dance club at night. As well as being a great restaurant '75 Main' also transforms itself into a club lounge come nightfall, while those looking for a more casual evening should head for 'Fellingham's Sports Bar,' a long-standing rustic space serving craft beers and cocktails. SOUTHAMPTON HISTORY It was 1640 when eight Puritan settlers from Massachusetts came ashore at Conscience Point and became the first residents of Southampton, making it the oldest settlement in New York State. With the help of the Shinnecock Indians, they learned how to work their newly purchased land, and soon the community was thriving. For two centuries, fishing and agriculture were the area's key industries, but with the coming of the railway in the 1870s, affluent New Yorkers began arriving in the town seeking a tranquil haven from big city living. Southampton's historic properties have been lovingly preserved and restored, retaining the singular character that has been charming visitors for centuries.
