Description
The space of a traditional village oven and an adjacent kitchen ( the actual bedroom) - with the traditional "ognistra" (fire place) on the once earthen floor - formed the current "The Old Oven House" after the necessary works for its transformation into a habitable building. All restoration and renovation works were carried out by the owner and renowned archaeologist- restorator with respect to the nature of the buildings dating back to the 19th century, following archaeological-restoration s The space Thus, The Old Oven House is an instantly heart-warming space as soon as you enter it – not least, because its key feature is the 19th-century wood oven that has been fully restored to its former glory. It is interesting to note that its basic support in natural olive wood has been, maintained and restored. The old oven sits today opposite the modern kitchen appliances and equipment, in a tasteful combination of old and new, creating a bright space with light entering either from the windows, the main door, or from the roof skylight. When the night falls, you can relax in the house’s spacious bedroom, with its antique selected furniture, and the beautifully preserved stone walls, which offer a quiet and refreshing sleep. And when you wake up, the room’s multiple windows offer uniquely picturesque views of the authentic Corfiot village architecture and rural landscape. The sounds of the countryside, along with the adjacent vegetable and olive tree garden, offer to the visitors a timeless sense of place and authentic Corfiot village life. This includes frequent visits by local greengrocers (daily), fishmongers (twice a week), as well as artisan bakers (daily / on order), who sell their fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, seafood, breads, and cakes directly to the village’s inhabitants. You can also enjoy your drink or coffee -if not at the kitchen’s marble table- at the front of the house’s main door, in the traditional “cantoùni” alley where the house is situated. Otherwise, the main door of the house is just thirty meters from the village square, where a traditional old café and a more contemporary café offer local dishes, drinks and light meals with local wine.
