Description

Relax and unwind at this quaint island getaway! Sands Island Refuge is a privately owned, 32-acre island, surrounded by thousands of acres of undeveloped marshes, island beaches and meandering natural water trails. Hammocks Beach State Park is just a short kayak or canoe paddle away! A two-bedroom off-the-grid cottage is the lone structure on the island. Although a short distance from historic Swansboro, North Carolina, this quiet, peaceful refuge seems a world away. The space The cabin has two bedrooms, separate bathroom with toilet and shower, a combined living space(den, dining, and kitchen), and a screened porch overlooking the sound and inlet. Bedroom #1 is a full size bed Bedroom #2 is a bunk bed (full + twin) Bedrooms come with linens, blankets, and pillows Kitchen comes fully stocked will dining ware, cups, cooking ware & utensils. The stove/oven and fridge + freezer run on propane. We also stock basic necessities such as salt, pepper, sugar, coffee. Hand towel, paper products, and cleaning materials are also available. The cabin is "off the grid" which means it is not connected to typical power and water sources. We use a solar power system to charge a battery bank to supply guests with essential services during your stay. Water is supplied from an electric pump via well. While this is suitable for drinking some folks find the taste to be unlike their normal tap water. Consider bringing along drinking water to supplement yourself during your trip. Lighting is provided via a combination of wall mounted fixtures that run off the battery banks, portable electric lanterns, and hurricane lamps that use oil. We also encourage guest to bring along their own flashlights, headlamps, etc. The cabin does not have AC. But was designed to take advantage of the local sea breeze to naturally cool the building through the numerous windows and the vented cupola. We also include portable fans to supplement the breeze. For the cooler months, there is a 30k BTU propane space heater that warms the entire building. There is a variety of kayaks & canoes to get out and explore the waterways around the island. We do provide lifejackets as well. If you have your own watercraft you would like to bring, we can easily transport them to the island with you during check-in. There is a charcoal grill on the island, along with BBQ utensils. You will need to bring your own charcoal. Other things to note Ferry service via a boat is included in your reservation. This will provide transportation for your party and belongings safely to the island. Access to the island is tidal and weather dependent. When considering your check-in day please factor this in and remain flexible. It is best to be available early on your chosen check-in day to provide maximum options. Your local guide and captain will assist you in planning your arrival times. We recommend that you bring some sort of water shoe to wear when exploring the island and waterways. There are sand spurs, prickly pear cactus, and oysters that can pose an issue to bare feet (and flip flops!). Something as simple as old tennis shoes that you don't mind getting muddy work great for this.
