This downstairs apartment in a Victorian cottage (1884) has a private riverfront balcony and a perfect view of the Iconic Edmund Pettus Bridge on the banks of the Alabama River. Charming, comfortable and cozy, it has 12 foot ceilings and is filled with heirlooms and original art & decor! Waking, you see the river from your pillow! Featured twice in the Cottage Journal Magazine, it is downtown & steps away from the St. James bar and dining room, near museums, art galleries and boutique shopping. The Bridge Tender's Cottage is truly unique. Listed on the National Registry for Historic Places, it was built in 1884 for the bridge tender who turned the existing bridge so riverboats could pass down the river. That bridge was torn down in 1940 when the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge was built...the bridge that played a key role in attaining voting rights for all people. The movie SELMA was filmed on that bridge, replaying the history of the Selma Marches to Montgomery led by Dr. Martin Luther King in 1965. The NPS Interpretive Center and the Bridge are only a block away. You will have the entire lower floor of the cottage so know that stairs are required to enter. The Bridge Tender's is a place to relax in as well as sightsee and has its own library so you can have a read and a rest by the river. The rooms give the feeling of being on a cozy, stationary house boat. You can see both the sunrise and sunset as you enjoy coffee or wine and cheese on the balcony...a fine spot for entertaining! There are also wonderful audio tours available on the Tour Selma App and a free list of AC's Picks. All your spaces are private and welcoming. You do not have to share any spaces or appliances. A Welcome Note giving you all the information you might need and more to help you get the most out of your stay will be awaiting you on your arrival. We are only a message away via the Airbnb App. Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions! Downtown Selma, this riverfront property is located at the end of Washington Street behind the Historic St. James Hotel with its bar and dining room and Selma's beautiful River walk. We are one block from the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the NPS Selma to Montgomery Interpretive Center and walking distance from two pharmacies, boutique shopping, the library and the Old Depot Museum with everything you've ever wanted to know about Selma plus much more. Parking near the house is free. We have two car rental agencies and some very limited public transit and taxi service. All the secrets or idiosyncrasies of the space are outlined in detail in your Welcome Book. Your comfortable stay is our goal.
