You will stay in a house that forms part of the history of the Gunks, and today makes a perfect base for hikers, climbers, runners, cyclists and cross-country skiers. The 65-mile network of carriage roads in Minnewaska State Park Preserve and the Mohonk Preserve is accessible just a few hundred yards from a historic modernized house. You can explore swimming holes and lakes, many miles of more rugged trails, and the popular climbing area (Gunks) of Peter’s Kill, just a 5-minute walk away. Nestled between Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park Preserve, the house was built over 130 years ago by the Quaker Smiley family, who founded the Mohonk and Minnewaska hotels. The house was later owned by the Phillips family, who owned Minnewaska for a time. In 2015 the house was privately purchased and renovated. The property extends to six acres, which borders (and was once part of) the 22,000 acres of Minnewaska State Park Preserve. Our home offers three bedrooms and two full baths, both with tubs and a Swedish made washer/dryer located in the second floor bathroom. Central Air and two heat sources. The Master bedroom has a king size bed. The second bedroom has a twin size bed and also a third bedroom with a twin bed and a pull out twin foam mattress. A well-stocked kitchen, dining/living room with a seasonal wood stove and Smart TV and dining table. Our entry way foyer has an additional seasonal wood stove to keep you cozy warm in the winter months. On the third floor we have a sitting area for additional space for the kids to play games or just hang out in and a full size foam couch/mattress. There are winter activities in the area, including cross country skiing, sledding, snow shoeing, and hiking. Mohonk and Minnewaska ski trails are both accessible from the house without getting into your car. Ski-in Ski-out. Private. Secluded. Secure. Book this place! Guests are welcome to use the entire house and grounds, with the exception of the large barn. The old wood shed may be accessed for collecting firewood only. The very popular Mountain Brauhaus restaurant is just a few minutes drive away, and the towns of New Paltz (many restaurants) and Gardiner (smaller and quieter) are both about a 15-minute drive. On the way in to New Paltz from the house, the Walkill View Farm Market (open March/April to late December) has fresh produce and some groceries, and Jenkins-Lueken Orchards is open year round for apples and a more limited supply of produce and groceries, as well as U-Pick in the fall. The area is spoilt for apple and pumpkin-picking locations. Rock and Snow is a great outdoor pursuits and rentals store in New Paltz. East Mountain Sports climbing school can arrange climbing guides. MINNEWASKA STATE PARK & MOHONK CYCLING/RUNNING/HIKING/CLIMBING/SKIING The house is uniquely situated; straddling both Minnewaska State Park and Mohonk Preserve. Access to the State Park is free if you are walking into the park, Mohonk Preserve requires a permit (daily or membership pass). Famous climbing (5 minutes) away by walking to Peter’s Kill up the old Lyons Road path. Cross Country Skiing is direct access from house up passed the wood shed on old Lyons Road (disused) then cut to the white blaze Minnewaska trailhead. If you have more than five people this house is not for you. Our professional cleaner sanitizes the same day as check out and vents the home. Then we come back and do a detailed cleaning and disinfecting. We spray down all beds, pillows, furniture and we do not allow any back to back reservations recommended by the CDC and Airbnb. We take the safety of our guests and our cleaner's health a priority in all our properties. Two spot parking in front of house only and parking is only for guests staying at the house. There is a lot of space for children to run on the property, however the property is not fenced off from the road which is something to consider if you have very young children.
