An off-grid hut in the high alpine environment of Grays and Torreys Mountains, notable 14'ers. Beautifully updated, rustic decor without electricity, running water or WiFi - a true peaceful respite! Quiet and remote, surrounded by grand mountains and beautiful scenery. Cozy up by the heat of the wood burning stove or go for a skin or snowshoe. Sleeps 7-9 in beds. IMPORTANT: The hut is only accessible by vehicle in summer, and you must have AWD or 4WD. IN WINTER THE HUT IS NOT ACCESSIBLE BY VEHICLE; you snowshoe or ski tour the 3 miles and 1400 vertical feet to the hut on the closed 4x4 trail. (Inquire about our snowcat to haul gear.) Guests must bring their own sleeping bags and pillowcases. Hut shoes/slippers are also nice to have. The hut is "self-clean"; leave it as found or better! The $250 cleaning fee will be fully, partially, or not returned dependent on condition of hut upon your departure. You enter the hut into an enclosed open space (eventually this will be the new kitchen!) that is great for storing luggage and other items. The bathroom is in this room, and further down the hall is a "bunk room" with a double-over-double bunk bed. The main living space is 12'x12' and includes three twin beds that double as seating/couches during the day. There is a woodstove for heat. One of the first things to do upon arrival is get a fire going. The next thing to do is send someone for water at the nearby Spring, creek or by melting snow in the large water pot on the woodstove. In winter, the Spring is about a 5 minute walk up the road, marked by a bamboo at the trail off the right side of the road just after the neighboring driveway on the left. We provide two large 5 gallon jugs for collecting water, and a sled to help carry the load. There is a small kitchenette set up with a bucket sink (bucket, as well as ALL water, must be emptied before checking out), utensils for cooking, silverware, dishware, pots, pans, teapot, french press, strainer, towels and/or paper towels, etc. It's not a bad idea to bring disposable plates and bowls to minimize dishes. Upstairs is accessed via an outdoor staircase and is another 12'x12' room with beautiful views and a king size bed. It is heated via the fire downstairs, and stays nice and cozy. Guests are free to use the entire hut area including deck, bathroom, main living spaces and upstairs room. There is a nice loop trail behind the hut that guests can explore. The basement and garage areas are locked and not available to guests. We, or our caretakers, are available to answer questions and offer guidance. However, internet is basically non-existent at the hut. To communicate, you can either walk further up the road towards Grays & Torreys trailhead, or down the road, but service is not guaranteed until you are nearly halfway down to Bakerville. Communicate needs before your stay, and be prepared to be self-sufficient during your stay. The hut is located just before the trailhead for Grays and Torreys mountains. There are several other cabins/huts nearby, but not within eyesight of our hut, and they are rarely used. The neighborhood is quiet, especially in winter, save for the folks who come to enjoy the snow and trail. In summer, especially on weekends, many hikers pass by the hut on the 4x4 road. In summer the hut is accessible via Steven's Gulch Road which is a very rocky, partially maintained 4x4 trail. It is 3 miles from I-70 to the hut on this 4x4 trail. AWD or 4WD vehicles with high clearance are STRONGLY recommended, basically required. We occasionally see 2WD vehicles on the road, but damage is often incurred! In winter the 4x4 trail is closed. Guests must park at Bakerville (exit 221 on I-70), then snowshoe or ski tour the 3 miles to the hut. It is about a 1.5-2 hour walk. Several people and the occasional snowmobile use the trail, so there is almost always a set track unless you're the first one in after a storm. Inquire about our Tucker snocat to haul gear at an additional cost. Please chop wood at the wood storage area located behind the hut. There are stumps to split on, and splitting mauls are available for your use. PLEASE DO NOT EVER CHOP WOOD OR KINDLING ON THE DECK!
