Description

New Communities' main campus, Resora - located on the Cypress Pond Plantation property - is a poetic place where meditation and reflection are the heart of the restorative escape from everyday life. Tucked in the midst of a rich water land oasis on a 1,600+ acre farm, this destination is a place where the land becomes a retreat, the mind can relax and the body can refresh. Resora provides an experience of nature while bearing witness to farming innovation and research, and Civil Rights history. The space Now this is 'glamping' at its best! This two bedroom retreat is fully handicapped accessible with a ramped entrance and features beautiful hardwood flooring throughout and an open floor plan with a fully equipped galley kitchen and bar seating, a dining and living room area. The Slater King Cottage has a magnificent view of Sherrod Manor, the 19th century mansion that is the centerpiece of Resora. (Alarm panel has a small camera for facial recognition when disarming the system. It is not a video camera). This cottage is named after the King family, who were and are one of the notable families in Albany, Georgia. Slater King was a real estate agent, vice president of the Albany Movement -- a desegregation and voters' rights coalition -- in 1962, and one of the founding board members of the New Communities Land Trust. He traveled to Israel with the founding organizers to view the kibbutz land sharing system and worked with his brother, C.B. King (for whom a street is named at NCI), to incorporate New Communities in the state of Georgia. Mr. King identified the first site of New Communities in Lee County, but was tragically killed in a car accident a few months after the organization was incorporated. Guest access This stay also includes access to: --walking trails --a working farm, including pecan and satsuma orchards, and a muscadine vineyard --wildlife and natural vegetation --an 85 acre pond with bass, brem and other occasional wild life. Ospreys have a yearly nesting presence in one of the large cypress trees in the center of the pond. Fishing at the pond is allowed, but gear is not provided by the host. Other things to note Please see our list of featured experiences offering tours of New Communities and local farms including opportunities for fishing, cooking and learning the history of the Albany Civil Rights Movement. Fishing at Resora must be pre-arranged through the tour site. Your hosts are available via email 24 hours a day. Security is onsite during daytime and evening hours and can address any concerns or questions with the property. Airbnb has made a donation to New Communities, in support of its work to empower Black farmers across Southwest Georgia.
