Historic Schoolhouse in Vernon Center
Sitting at the corner of a charming village green, this award-winning 2021 renovated 1896 schoolhouse has all the modern amenities, plus the charm of a Victorian landmark. Enjoy the maple tree-filled, National Register historic district or take a quick trip to Hamilton College, Oneida, Colgate, Turning Stone or Vernon Downs. It's quiet but convenient to a lot! *2023 Award* for Modern reuse of Historic Building! All proceeds go to preserving this and other historic buildings in Vernon Center! There is a foyer and coat room when you enter. That leads to both the bedroom and the main "schoolroom", which is a 900 sq ft, light-filled living space, filled with comfortable furniture, and modern kitchen. The all new open-concept kitchen, designed by architects, has beautiful blue cabinets, a huge island /table with black walnut countertop crafted by local Mennonites, and stocked with what you need to cook and serve. The bathroom is beautifully redone with marble tile, rolling shower door and schoolhouse lamps, all in the original space. A living space Cabinet turns into a Queen-Sized murphy bed! Pull right up to the front steps of the schoolhouse. The park and local store are only a few steps away. Take a picturesque stroll around the circle or to the playground, basketball court, or picnic pavilion. Or visit the Village of Clinton, Hamilton College, Vernon, Sherrill, Oneida, Turning Stone Casino, Vernon Downs, or the Oneida Community Mansion House, all less than 10 minutes away! The Schoolhouse sits at the corner of a National Register Historic District, a maple tree-lined village green with a Victorian era Gazebo in the middle, two historic churches, and other historic buildings. Adjacent is a working Post Office, and next door is the local deli with great food and ice cream! It is in a friendly, close-knit neighborhood. And you'll probably see a horse-pulled Amish buggy or two drive by during your stay, to recall 19th century times. Parking is right in front of the door and free. You can walk to the neighborhood deli and convenince store, playground, and around the village green. The other half of the former two-room schoolhouse is currently the local post office, open in the mornings. The parking lot is shared with them. French doors off the kitchen lead to the verdant side and back yard, lined by hydrangeas and fire bushes. A croquet set and grill are available.
