Other things to note Carro and the Côte Bleue — The Authentic Soul of Maritime Provence Welcome to Carro, a village where time seems to stand still. No concrete as far as the eye can see, but a genuine working fishing port — the leading port for bluefin tuna fishing with the seinche net, and the fourth largest port in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. Set within the commune of Martigues (13500), officially recognised as a seaside resort yet remaining deeply authentic, Carro is one of the best-kept secrets of the Côte Bleue — a wild and protected coastline, listed among the best-preserved natural sites in the PACA region. Waking Up to the Rhythm of the Port Every morning from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM (weather permitting), the harbour quay comes alive in a symphony of colours and voices. Fishermen bring in the night's catch — sea bream, sea bass, red mullet — and the stalls fill up before the eyes of locals and visitors alike. This is the beating heart of the village, a spectacle of flavours and scents that sets the tempo for the day. Don't leave without tasting poutargue, known as caviar martégal. These mullet roe, dried in their natural membrane, are prepared using the ancestral calen technique — a traditional fishing method still practised in Martigues and Port-de-Bouc. Golden, intense and lightly briny, it is best enjoyed in thin slices with a drizzle of olive oil and a glass of dry white wine from the Coteaux d'Aix. An unmissable gastronomic experience. The Sea as Your Playground Whether you seek contemplation or adventure, Carro has something for everyone. Les Arnettes is a local legend among windsurfers. When the mistral or easterly wind picks up, the ballet of sails creates a breathtaking spectacle — windsurfing and sailing conditions here rank among the finest on the Mediterranean coast. For underwater enthusiasts, the Côte Bleue marine reserve reveals exceptional biodiversity. The ancient quarry of Baou Tailla, where Romans once carved stone from the very edge of the sea, is one of the most remarkable dive sites in the region. Stand-up paddling, kayaking and snorkelling offer further ways to discover otherwise inaccessible coves on crystal-clear water. Six Faces, Endless Swimming The Côte Bleue offers a variety of beaches unique in the Mediterranean, from large family stretches to wild, secluded coves. Please note: dogs are not permitted on some beaches, most car parks are paid in high season, some beaches have lifeguards in summer, and the naturist beach requires an FFN licence. Carro Beach: family-friendly and welcoming, sand and pebbles at the foot of the active fishing port. An exceptional diving spot thanks to the Baou Tailla quarry. Public showers and lifeguard post in summer. Shops and restaurants nearby. La Couronne Beaches: four beaches including the large Verdon beach (24,000 m²), with playground, volleyball courts, showers, toilets and lifeguard post. Sainte-Croix beach, accessible from March to November, is the recognisable filming location of the TV series Camping Paradis. Some beaches are accessible to people with reduced mobility. Martigues Beaches: Bonnieu/Ponteau (sand and pebbles, free parking), Laurons (sand, picnic tables, lifeguard post) and Bonnieu naturist beach (FFN licence required). Sausset-les-Pins Beaches: seven beaches and small coves along 8 km of coastline. Some with showers and free parking, PMR access on the Corniche. Carry-le-Rouet Beaches: Tuilière, calanques and Cap Rousset (sand and pebbles), lifeguard post, showers and toilets. Some with paid parking, PMR access on certain beaches. Ensuès-la-Redonne Beaches: small wild pebble coves, accessible on foot only, unsupervised — for lovers of authenticity and chosen solitude. Le Rove Beaches: wild coves between Niolon and La Vesse, ideal for coastal hiking. Unsupervised, adorned with pebbles, they offer breathtaking panoramas over the bay of Marseille. Escaping into Nature The coastal path GR51 follows the old customs officers' trail for 15 km along the Mediterranean. Between white limestone and deep blue, the calanques of Niolon and Méjean unfold with breathtaking viewpoints. Informative panels along the way cover heritage, ecology, geology and archaeology. The botanical loop at Carro (800 m) invites a gentle stroll through garrigue and pine forest, discovering thyme, rosemary and Aleppo pine. The fitness trail at La Couronne (1.6 km) combines family activities, pine forest and sea views — perfect for mornings when you want to move without straying too far. Heritage & Culture On the first floor of the Cercle des Pêcheurs, the exhibition Entre mer et collines traces the history of Carro and La Couronne through photographs, old objects and personal accounts — fishing, archaeology, agriculture and collective memory. A sincere and moving cultural stop, far from conventional museums. Local Life & Flavours Every Wednesday and Saturday, the markets of Carro and La Couronne bring the village to life. Colours, flavours, exchanges — the perfect opportunity to soak up the convivial atmosphere and fill your basket with Provençal produce. The Côte Bleue — A Natural Choice You come here to rest. You leave feeling as though you have experienced something real. The Côte Bleue offers far more than a seaside holiday — it is an immersion into a Mediterranean that remains true, generous and capable of surprising you. You are in exactly the right place to experience it. Registration Details 13056000328G4
