Available: Books, games and toys.Read about the history of the house in the entrance hallway. Due to negative experiences, we no longer host work crews. The space Since first being settled over 250 hundred years ago, the house and the farmland on which it is located have been the historical home for generations of the Ferguson family. As a working farm, there are a variety of farm animal grazing in the fields. There is a hand painted mural in the den by the late Edith Ferguson Carter. The view, clean air and beauty of the surrounding landscape make the stay worthwhile. If you appreciate history, art and nature, this is the place for you. Our farm is on the NC Birding Trail and there are painted bird plaques on the log cabins at the village for a fun "search the birds" game for children. The farm is great for those who want to give their children a country experience. We have our farm protected from development by having it in a land trust. We are only stewards of this beautiful place and want it preserved for the future. We want there to be space where wildlife can continue to live undisturbed. This area is designated as one of the best places in the USA for observing the heavens (bring a telescope!). We now have a third bedroom restored. This room has antique beds (a twin bed and a three-quarter bed) that have been in our family for generations. The antique beds have custom made mattresses for comfort. Fishing is available in the nearby Yadkin River, a five minute walk down the road or across the road from highway#268 is the Ferguson family fish pond (probably a 10 minute walk). Guest access There is a side entrance to the right of the house. At this time only a section of the house is available: three bedrooms, kitchen, den, laundry room, 1 full bath, 1/2 bath and a deck. There is no one living on the premises. The front porch of the house features antique wicker rocking chairs that once belonged to one of the Ferguson aunts who lived here in the early 1900's as well as three other wicker pieces. The other part of the house (not open for Airbnb) is used for Whippoorwill Academy and Village board meetings and storing files with historic information of the area. In the coming year, the Martines hope to open more bedrooms after remodeling has been completed. For stays longer than two weeks, we have a cleaning crew that comes in to mop, vac, dust and change sheets. Other things to note Our Tom Dooley and Appalachian Culture festival will be held at the village on the third Saturday in Sept. from 10 am-5:00 p.m. The hiking path on the road behind the house leads to the river. Follow the signs. Enjoy birdwatching and fishing in the Yadkin River. Fun for the children could include the "Go Find the Birds" game. Each cabin in the village has small plaques of handprinted birds of NC. Set a time limit and GO! Ski season is here and the slopes are not far away. The Carter children's nursery which has hand painted Disney characters painted on all of the walls by the late Edith Ferguson Carter back in the early 1950's is the 3rd available bedroom! We have lots of books for your reading pleasure. The barns are off limits and in need of restoration as well (another project). We have two other Airbnb's (both are located under Lenoir). One is only 4 miles away from this house and is likely the oldest dentist office in NC and is available for 2 people (one bedroom). It looks like a Hansel and Gretal house with beautiful details. Look for Our Unique American Craftsman house in Lenoir has 3 bedrooms and is within walking distance of restaurants and a park. Please check out those places as well.
