Description

Glebe Cottage is a two hundred year old thatched farm house on the edge of Kilmacrenan village, where you can enjoy a taste of days gone by in Donegal. It is conveniently located on the main road from Letterkenny to Glenveagh National Park and walking distance from Nora's Traditional Irish pub.The cottage is part of a group of thatched farm buildings, one of which has been converted into a café where guests can enjoy fantastic homemade food, another our takeaway shop. The space Staying at our place is an unique experience! Two hundred year old thatched Irish cottage in the beautiful Co. Donegal, where you can avail of homemade breakfast and lunch and of course awesome Irish roasted coffee in our café adjacent to where you'll be staying. We love telling people about the area and all the amazing places to visit eg. Glenveagh national park, so many fantastic hikes and outdoor activities, our favourite beaches and places to eat & drink, the stuff you don't find in tourist books! Please note that the cottage is in the village on the main road so expect traffic noise during the day. Guest access During your stay, you will have Glebe cottage all to yourself. The grounds around the cottage were originally a working farm yard and there are a number of antique farming implements and machines, around the grounds, to wander around and have a look at. Guests are also welcome to enjoy a meal or a coffee in the Coffee Time Café when we are open (Wed-Sun). Winter hours are Fri-sun. There is a description and link of our café in our guidebook. The WiFi in the café is usually working and you are welcome to use it as well. You will have your own key to the cottage and there is plenty of parking out the front of the cottage. Other things to note To help insure that you have the best possible experience, there are a few things to be aware of before making your booking. While you are at Glebe, it is important to remember that you are staying in a two hundred year old Irish farm house. We have renovated the cottage with necessary modern comforts but it is not without its idiosyncrasies. Nearly all of the woodwork is original and has to be treated relatively gently. It is very important that you be comfortable lighting and maintaining a fire, as well as the possibility of smokiness from occasional downdrafts. While you won't have trouble keeping the cottage warm with the fire, the sash windows and half door can be draughty at times. Although the cottage is thoroughly cleaned between guests you may occasionally find things like dust or cobwebs. This just goes with the territory with a historical cottage of this type. Likewise most of the plumbing and electrical features are from the nineteen fifties and while everything works well, it can sometimes require a bit more understanding than in a modern house. While renovating Glebe Cottage our aim has been to be sympathetic as we can and retain as many of the original features as possible. Also note that the cottage is right on the main road through the village of Kilmacrennan so there will be traffic noise during the day. It is also adjacent to our cafe which can be busy especially at the weekends. It is a fantastic spot if you would like a place with a bit of buzz where you might get a chance to have the craic with some locals but for someplace more isolated and private maybe not so much. If you are looking for a unique stay that is charming and authentic then we think that you will love the cottage as much as we do.
