Carriage No. 2 is one of four unique rentals, nestled beneath magnolia and pink cherry blossom, uniquely positioned where Tyne & Wear, County Durham and Northumberland meet. Two 1930s cargo rail carriages, lovingly recovered from the North East Railway, have been transformed into characterful and cosy retreats — retaining many original features while offering a stay unlike anything else in the North East. Carriage No. 2 is one of four unique retreats at Lockhaugh Farm, a charming 19th-century farmstead uniquely positioned where Tyne & Wear, County Durham and Northumberland converge. Slightly larger than its neighbour, it is nestled beneath a canopy of magnolia and pink cherry blossom — a simply magical setting that changes beautifully with every season. The south-facing carriage enjoys breathtaking views across the Derwent Valley, the National Trust's Gibside Estate and the iconic Column to Liberty — a backdrop that never loses its magic. The light and airy open-plan interior is finished with walnut ply and reclaimed school gym flooring, nodding beautifully to its fascinating railway heritage. A bespoke handcrafted double bed dressed in fresh linens and a luxury topper ensures a restful night's sleep, while a fully equipped kitchen with hob and microwave and a dining table with stools make it a comfortable and self-contained retreat. A separate bathroom with shower cubicle, basin and toilet, and for cold days radiator heating throughout complete the accommodation. Step outside onto the small private balcony — the perfect spot for a morning coffee beneath the blossom — or settle into the garden with sweeping views across meadows and woodland. Double-glazed doors open directly onto a private south-facing garden, a lovely spot for outdoor dining, quiet relaxation, birdwatching and stargazing. Step through the farm gate into the meadow beyond and the River Derwent lies just below, perfect for wild swimming and fishing. Miles of walks and cycleways begin right from the doorstep, with the National Trust's Gibside Estate and the delights of the wider North East easily within reach. Guest access Park in the free car park at the end of the lane and walk through the farm gate. Follow the drive past Stable House and the Farmhouse, then take the little track into the private garden of Carriage No. 2. If needed you'll find an orange cart and wheelbarrow by the main gate to help transport your belongings. The carriage is better connected than its peaceful setting might suggest. Rowlands Gill village is a pleasant 20-minute stroll along the scenic Derwent Walk — a lovely walk in its own right. Regular buses from the A696 at the top of the lane run directly into Newcastle, making it easy to explore the city and beyond without the car. From Newcastle Central Station, direct trains connect to Durham (15 mins), York (50 mins), Edinburgh (90 mins) and London (162 mins). Newcastle Airport is just a 20-minute drive away, opening up destinations further afield. Other things to note We're delighted to welcome one well-behaved pet — particularly dogs of small to medium size. In exceptional circumstances a second pet may be considered for a supplementary fee, so please get in touch if you'd like to discuss this. We also offer a dog walking service — just ask for details and charges when booking. We ask that pets are kept on a lead in all shared areas of the farm and off the furniture and bedding inside the carriage. A friendly word about our own residents — while Lockhaugh Farm is no longer a working farmstead, it very much has a life of its own. On fine days you'll find our chickens and ducks roaming freely, and you're likely to cross paths with our sociable cat and cockerpoo along the way. We also have three beehives on the farm, so please be mindful around them. It all adds to the unique charm of a genuine farmstead stay.
