Description

Our beautifully restored c. 1930s railroad cottage, nestled in a forest, is a lovely place to relax, or work in peace. It comes with two bedrooms, porches, living room and fully-equipped kitchen. Lively downtown Athens is only a few minutes away. The space Come stay with us if you want a cozy retreat from Athens. While we are only 10 minutes from downtown and campus, the 10-acre lot surrounded by 120 acres of easement land gives it the scenic beauty of a rural county. Our place is a beautifully restored c. 1930s railroad cottage with original heart pine floors, idyllic scenery and two porches. It stands a couple of hundred feet (through the woods) from the 100-year-old main house where your hosts, Laura and Jeff, live. It is nestled in a pine forest but has a nice lawn and looks out onto an open pasture on the back side. The cottage and main house are both set back from the road so there's little traffic noise. The cottage has four rooms of equal size: bedroom, living room, kitchen and spare room (best used as an office or second bedroom). A small but full bathroom with walk-in shower extends off of the main bedroom. The kitchen is fully equipped with stove, fridge, pots and pans, coffee maker, toaster and utensils. Coffee and tea are provided. The historic cottage has a rustic feel to it (in a good way!) with tongue-and-groove walls and ceiling and hearth. The fireplace was closed up when the cottage was moved here; the original chimney is now a skylight over the added bathroom, so be sure to look up. We've got a couple of rocking chairs on the back porch, which makes a good place to sit and watch the north pasture grow. The walls inside are filled with artwork and photographs from Ethiopia, Zanzibar and Athens, Ga. Things to do: relax! The cottage is a lovely place to unwind, or work in peace if that's what you're here for. It does have wi-fi access but, in keeping with its period of construction, does not have a TV. Kick back and enjoy some of the books on the shelf and ask us if you need more. You will probably want a car to get into Athens, since we're 6 miles (a 10-minute drive) from downtown. East Athens is a bit closer, about 3 miles from the house, and there you can find dozens of restaurants, bars, and grocery stores, but downtown Athens is definitely the big draw. Apart from that, if you want we'll give you a tour of the property, including the mule barn and oldest two-hole outhouse in the county! Notes on sleeping: The bed in the main bedroom is a full size one, not queen or king. The bed in the office/second bedroom, if you want it, is a single size day bed with a single size trundle that rolls out. Linens, blankets and pillows are provided for all beds. Note on shared bathroom placement: Any guest in the second bedroom has to pass through the first bedroom to reach the bathroom. Sorry! That, apparently, is the way they built railroad cottages.
