The ranch house combines the convenience of staying in the environs of the historic town of Union with the tranquility of living in the country, and features scenic views from every room. Our location is an excellent base for a drive, road bicycling, or stroll along scenic, winding, country roads with little vehicular traffic. We frequently have guests who arrive from hundreds of miles away, with here as their destination. The ranch house is close to local businesses which also seek lodging for their visitors. It's a great place to stay while working remotely too, with superior wireless internet upload and download speeds. People from all states, countries, races, religions and political views are welcomed here. Elmwood was built by Thomas Jefferson's best brickmason (William B Phillips) and we do our best to pursue happiness in our scenic environment at every opportunity Guest access This listing allows access to the entire ranch house which is a roomy 2000 sf. The house is all on one level there are no stairs. There are multiple acres of landscaped lawns which include a lovely spring fed pond and an octagonal vegetable and cutting garden, which guests are welcome to enjoy while here. Guests may fish in the pond if interested for bluegills and largemouth bass. Visitors to Elmwood are keen to photograph the big house from multiple vantage points around the property. The town of Union lies at the foot of the 900 foot driveway and its historic district, filled with historic homes, churches and log cabins, is a pleasant 3 minute stroll away. There is a 10 acre hayfield across the street which contains a fenced enclosure with a 1901 statue of a confederate soldier, erected to honor the Monroe Guard who served in the Va. 27th during the Civil war, most of whom lost their lives in the conflict. Of the original 104 who left Union in 1861, only several survived to Appomattox. There are several notable cemeteries in Union, each within easy walking distance from the house. For example, Green Hill cemetery is on a high hill above the town, and affords a view for 50 miles across both near as well as far away mountains. The ranch house now has two porches. And although we do not show AC as an amenity, because we do not centrally air condition the house - preferring fresh air and screen doors accessing the porches- each of the three bedrooms has a powerful 9000 btu/hr air conditioner with remote control that can create a sleeping environment as cool or even cold as each guest desires.
