Our non-electric cabin in the woods is the perfect glamping opportunity. This rustic retreat is a 5-8 minute walk from our house and parking lot. The 270 square foot tiny house has a queen mattress in the loft, a wood stove for heat, cooking facilities including a propane cook top and gravity fed rain water (non-potable). Large windows look out over a beautiful southern Indiana holler. Camp shower & composting toilet. Experience comfortable, tent - free camping! The space Our farm is a permaculture homestead and plant nursery, and we also offer educational tours ($35/hr). We are a working farm (read: a little messy) and we minimize mowing whenever possible, but we do mow a path down to the cabin. You'll pass through our sylvopasture orchard on your way down to the cabin, with lots of unique and unusual fruits. We have a very rich variety of wildlife on the property, including a large diversity of song birds, deer, wild turkeys, possums, foxes, frogs, insects (including ticks and mosquitoes), non-venomous snakes (the only venomous snakes in our area are copperheads but we've only seen one on the entire farm in 20 years), salamanders and lizards. There have been very occasional sightings of bobcats and mountain lions in our area, but we've not seen them here. We do hear coyotes down in the holler sometimes. The cabin is in the woods where there are deer mice who sometimes find their way in despite our best efforts, but we generally manage to keep them at bay. There is a fire pit in front of the cabin surrounded by edible landscaping, a propane grill and a small charcoal grill, a tree swing, and in season there are hammocks available to hang in the woods below the cabin. Guests are welcome to scavenge dead wood for camp fires (please save the split firewood for the wood stove). We have 20+ acres of woods to explore with sinkholes and a spring, and you are also welcome to wander around the farm and gardens. Guest access You will be parking close to the road and walking to the cabin which is a 5-8 minute walk. We provide a wagon to haul your bags. In wet weather the trail to the cabin is muddy, so bring boots! Other things to note This get-away is perfect for those who love to camp but want a little more comfort. There is no electricity, but there is decent cell service at the cabin, at least for AT&T and Verizon (possibly other carriers?). A small propane wall furnace and wood stove keep the cabin warm in the winter, and two battery powered fans are supplied for summer comfort. In addition to basic necessities (including towels, sheets, pillows, dishes and pans), we also provide firewood for the wood stove, lanterns, and a wagon to haul your bags, since the cabin is a 5-8 minute walk from parking. In planning for your trip just consider anything else you would typically bring camping such as a head lamp, fully charged phone/device batteries, a cooler, rain gear, boots, bug spray, etc. In wet weather the trail to the cabin is muddy, so bring boots! We provide a small battery pack for phone charging which you are welcome to recharge in our barn if necessary. Bathroom facilities include a sawdust bucket composting toilet and a low-flow camp shower that you fill by heating water on the stove. Tap water is gravity fed (low-flow) and non-potable, but we provide a jug of drinking water. We have working farm dogs that run loose (one of our own plus a neighbor's). They are pretty calm and friendly with people.
