The pretty village of Grasmere is just down the road, where you can explore Dove Cottage, famous as one of Wordsworth’s earlier homes where he and his sister spent 8 years of ‘plain living, but high thinking’. It was here he wrote his most famous work, ‘I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud’, and is now a fantastic museum about the writer. Grasmere also offers a selection of bars and restaurants, tea rooms and independent shops, where you can try some of the world famous Grasmere gingerbread. Slightly further afield, but not too far, explore Ambleside and Windermere, where you can enjoy steamer rides, the World of Beatrix Potter, rowing or swing amongst the treetops at Go Ape.
