The history of the house The Old Merchant House was built in 1935 to house the family of Constantine Georgoulis and to provide premises for his business in trading foodstuffs in the centre of mercantile Athens and in close proximity to the city’s Central Market. As was customary in those days, Georgoulis and his family lived above the shop. The cast iron old lift (no longer in use) as well as other original features of the building have been maintained and lovingly restored. Today Athinas Street remains a shopping hub close to Monastiraki Square and the Acropolis. The house is surrounded by bustling local restaurants, cafes and traditional shops, where Athenians have shopped for decades. The property is still in the family and is owned by Georgoulis’ great-grandsons, while the original shop is now a plant and flower shop. Guest access The whole place is available for the visitors.
