The Cradle of the State of Mecklenburg The village of Mecklenburg – a small town between Schwerin and Wismar – is located on historic grounds. The Michilinburg Castle was the seat of a tribal prince and the main fortress of the Obodrites for centuries. John I of Mecklenburg ordered its demolition in 1256 because he needed the material to build his princely court in Wismar. Around the middle of the 14th century, the present-day village emerged from the outer settlements. Over time, Mikelenburg became Mecklenburg—and thus the name of an entire region. Mecklenburg Village The village is easily accessible, even without a car, thanks to the train station and bus connections from Schwerin and Wismar.
