Description

This renovated 1850s farmhouse is located five minutes from Washington Depot, and is conveniently located to all Litchfield County has to offer. The space The house has modern amenities, including stainless steel appliances, a gas fireplace, and geothermal heating/cooling. There are two upstairs bedrooms plus a small nook off the master and a tiny, heated guest cottage that serve as additional sleeping quarters. The property is 5 acres, and includes a large yard, walking trails, fire pit, vegetable garden, and a stream for wading. The property is a former dairy farm. The bank barn is on a registry of historic barns as is a spring house, where the fresh milk was kept cool until it went to market. An outhouse dating to an earlier era, although no longer in operation, provides yet another historical detail. The farmhouse was modernized in the 1980s, with beautiful finishes throughout, including bead board ceilings, wainscoting, built-ins, crown moldings and other classic details. The property is set in a beautiful valley. A steam babbles year round about 10 feet from the back deck. We are located very close to The Gunnery School, so this would be an ideal location for visiting parents. Taft, the Canterbury School and Rumsey Hall are also within easy driving distance. Guest access Full access to the main house, guest cottage, and grounds. Other things to note The house is situated close to the road. When it was built in 1850 this was considered a desirable trait. While most would consider this to be a less desirable site in the age of the automobile, we have not found it to be a problem. The noise from the street is moderate during the day and almost non-existent at night, and from the back of the house you are hardly aware of street sounds. The main house has two bedrooms. The queen size bedroom also has a little annex off of it with a built-in daybed ("narrow" twin mattress). The other bedroom has a twin bunk bed. We also have two air mattresses and a Pack n Play "mini-crib" with mattress. The guest cottage is one of our favorite spots to sleep, and we've listed it as a separate bedroom here. It is quite rustic and quite small - 9' x 11' - but accommodates a full-size bed. It is heated by a “mini” wood stove (4-6 hours of heat per load of wood) and there is no A/C, and you'll need to walk inside to use the bathroom, but it is literally right next to the brook, so you'll be rewarded with the soothing sounds of rushing water lulling you to sleep.
