Mountain View / Trailhead Cabin
Description
The view of Marcy is amazing. The sound of the brook below is magical. The short walk to one of the main trailheads in the high peaks is a sought-after plus, given the dearth of parking there. Hikers feel at home amidst the mountaineering history reflected in the books and in the photos and paintings on the walls. The cabin is eco-friendly throughout: organic sheets and towels, wool blankets, wool rugs, green soaps and cleaning products, mini-splits, energy-saving lighting. The space We are located in Keene Valley in the high peaks region of New York's Adirondack State Park. Our house is both an ideal base camp for day hikes or ski trips and a haven where one can relax out on the deck or enjoy the wonderful views from the living room and bedrooms. We are just steps from the Garden Trail Head which provides access to many of the of the region's high peaks – as well as smaller mountains. We are also a 5-minute drive (or ~20 minute walk) from the shops and restaurants of Keene Valley. The house itself is a one-story clapboard house tucked in several wooded acres, including a stretch along the bank of John's Brook (a steep but beautiful walk down the bank, and ideal for brisk swims). It has four bedrooms: 3 two-person rooms and one single. The largest (main) bedroom is in its own wing, and the other three bedrooms are off a hallway in another wing of the house. Three bedrooms face the mountains, and one, much more shaded, looks out on trees. The house has a large living room, and the kitchen/dining room area makes a great community cooking space. Finally, one of the defining features of the house is a spacious and beautiful deck. The deck overlooks the valley on the north side of the Great Range of the High Peaks Wilderness. Mount Marcy rises nine miles away at the end the valley. You cannot see any other houses from the deck – it is very secluded. The house has one and a half bathrooms, although the half-bathroom is not winterized and is closed in colder months. Bed linens, towels and blankets are provided. The water is mountain well water from a deep well. Unfortunately the fireplace is no longer available for use. Beds: the beds are twins but, in the 3 two-person rooms, 2 twin beds are combined to form larger beds. The default arrangement for the beds is that the twins in the main bedroom are made up as a king and share a duvet, the beds in the other two-person bedrooms are made up as twins and share a duvet. The single room has one twin bed. (Please see pictures.) Please let us know if you’d like anything other than the default option – we ask that you please not move furniture yourself. Guest access The entire cabin. Other things to note In making a reservation you are agreeing to read and observe the house rules contained in the notebook that you will find on the dining table. These include the request that you take trash to the dump on departure – unfortunately, given the constraints of living away from Keene Valley and the remote location, we are not able to provide trash removal at this time. Due to forest fire risk, smoking, grilling, and outdoor fires are prohibited. During July and August we only do week-long rentals from Saturday to Saturday. Three weeks prior to any given date, however, we are happy to open up available dates for shorter rentals. Please just ask. Note re mice: Wood mice are everywhere in the woods, and we work hard to keep the cabin mouse free, but the occasional mouse slips through. This is the reality, more broadly, of Adirondack cabins. If you see a mouse or signs of one, we can ask someone to come set traps. But we do ask that you not book the cabin if seeing a mouse would feel unmanageable to you. Thank you so much! Hiking note: Hiking in the Adirondack Mountain Reserve (leaving from the Ausable Club parking lot) now requires a reservation not only for parking but even for hiking. Please go on the portal ahead of time to see when reservations will become available for the date/s you want. Hiking from the Garden (steps from the house) requires no reservation.
