The Welsh Gatehouse is a beautiful historic house with modern amenities. Imagine staying in a fairy tale castle built in 1270. The thick walls, ancient windows & steep spiral staircase say 'history'. Romantic log fires keep you warm you in winter, & the thick walls keep you cool in summer. Stay in your very own castle. The Welsh Gatehouse is a luxury, award-winning medieval retreat, built around 1270 in the time of Edward I. Its first recorded history appears in 1307, when Bogo de Knovil died and the estate returned to the Crown. Today, over seven hundred years later, this Grade II* listed hideaway still holds that sense of story and presence. With its towers and thick stone walls, the building speaks of history. For two adults and pets (no babies or children, sorry) The Welsh Gatehouse offers an intimate and atmospheric escape, and a perfect base from which to explore South Wales. We welcome well-behaved dogs by prior arrangement. A small supplement applies (£30 for one dog, £50 for two, £70 for three), along with a £300 refundable housekeeping deposit for guests bringing dogs. INSIDE THE WELSH GATEHOUSE The Gatehouse has been carefully refurbished, balancing comfort with its ancient character. The main living space has a spacious feel, with exposed beams, deep-set stone windows, and thick walls that hold both warmth and history. A deep leather sofa and wood-burning stove create a space to settle into, while the sleeping area adds to the sense of romance and retreat. For those who are curious, you can climb all the way up the tower to a small viewing area, offering a different perspective of the surrounding landscape. The kitchen is fully equipped with oven, hob, fridge, air fryer, microwave, and small freezer. There is a modern wet room with shower, and downstairs you will find a washing machine and tumble dryer if needed. Entertainment includes a TV with Freeview, DVD player, and CD player with iPod docking. Heating is provided by night storage heaters and the wood-burning stove. Because this is a medieval building, some features require care. There is a steep spiral staircase of around 30 steps leading to the main living area. The gallery bedroom is accessed via a companionway ladder, and you will need to duck beneath a beam. If mobility is a concern, please do read the accessibility information carefully. We also suggest bringing smaller bags rather than one large suitcase. OUTSIDE The Gatehouse is self-contained with its own private entrance. There is parking for two cars (one behind the other). The owners live quietly at the far end of the garden in a sixteenth-century Monmouthshire gentry house, and are nearby if needed, while fully respecting your privacy. You are welcome to use the enclosed courtyard garden, a peaceful spot to sit, read, or cook outside. A barbecue is provided, you simply bring what you would like to cook and some coal. The garden is spacious and secure, so dogs can relax safely. An EV charging point is available on site and managed via the Tap Electric app. SEASONS & STAYS High season includes Valentine’s Day, Easter (Good Friday through to Bank Holiday Monday), and 23 December to 2 January. Minimum stays: • Easter and Christmas: 3 nights • Valentine’s Day: 2 nights Guest access You are the only people staying in this self contained building. There are no other buildings nearby. The owners live at the other end of the garden in a Monmouthshire Gentry House (16C). It is close to Chepstow, is in Monmouthshire, great for seeing and walking in the Wye Valley, the Forest of Dean, and close to Bristol and Cardiff. Other things to note We supply all the linen, towels, wood for the wood-burning stove etc. You need to bring yourselves, your food and your drink!! (And coal if you intend to use the barbecue). We allow up to 3 well behaved dogs. There will be a £30 supplement for one dog, £50 for 2 dogs and £70 for 3 dogs. If you bring 2 or 3 dogs we will send a request for payment through the resolution centre. We take a £300 good housekeeping deposit from everyone who brings a pet. This will be refunded within 5 days of the end of your stay provided there are no damages. And we will send you a form to fill in to give us info about your dog(s).
