Known most perhaps for the clean, deep, weed-free water, mature pines and granite outcrops, many have come to regard this lake chain as the best kept secret in the Kawarthas. It lacks the transient big boats of the Trent Severn and has maintained a quieter reputation as a cottage destination. The eastern portion of the 7 lake chain is bordered by the Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park. Encompassing 37, 587 hectares of protected land, Kawartha Highlands is the largest park in Ontario south of Algonquin. It is a relatively undeveloped area featuring many small lakes, wetlands, rugged forests and rocky outcrops. A number of diverse low-impact recreational activities are available in the park. Easy access to the park out your back door is a major highlight of living or cottaging in this lake region. NOTE: Lake levels drop dramatically in late summer as the water flows south down the Mississauga River in order to maintain water levels in the Trent-Severn Waterway via Buckhorn Lake. By mid-September, water levels can drop by 5 ft, often providing residents with beach areas along the shore.
