Just six miles from town, you'll find an Organic Valley Dairy farm! Looking for fun, adventure, peaceful landscapes... Monmouth is in the center of it all. Three miles from the Willamette River ~~~ a boat ramp with excellent parking --- you'll find access to launch your kayaks or canoes for an easy float down river. Also, in Independence, an 8 screen, recently built, cinema offering a variety of escapes iatthe movies!!! Or stroll through the River Gallery and enjoy the exceptional art on display, antiques abound in Independence. Both Monmouth and Independence offer excellent ice cream shops! Love micro brews and wine country while exploring local vineyards /tasting rooms? Monmouth is central to all of this, as well! We're 60 miles and many breweries/wineries south of Portland and the same distance north of Eugene. Head west for a little over an hour and you find the breathtaking Oregon Coast offering days of beach combing, exploring, fishing, golfing, and perusing the many galleries and shops. If it's more rivers, fishing, hiking, and vistas, both wooded and desert, you want ~~~ head east for two hours and explore sunny Central Oregon. Be sure to leave time to stroll down the sidewalks of Sisters on your way over (about 2 hours east of Salem)... to Central Oregon. Continue east from Sisters then south when you reach Highway 97 and you'll be in Bend --- another sparkling Central Oregon town, boasting close proximity to rivers --- fishing, camping, hiking trails, running paths, and Mt. Bachelor Ski Slopes, PLUS ~~~ the home of Oregon Trail of Dreams... Jerry Scdoris, a former school teacher and his internationally known daughter, Rachel, who not only train Iditarod sled dogs, but also take visitors on trails through the woods at Mt Bachelor timberline, in the summer with wheels, and sledding on snow trails in the winter. (NOT to be missed... Call ahead for reservations) Rachel is a motivational speaker, writer, and has competed in several Iditarod events in Alaska over the years as well as international sporting team competitions, doing so, being ~~~ legally blind! Dining, sigh... GREAT local venues whether it's The Sippery, Rick's Place, Mink Pad Thai, Sing Fay Chinese, Momoji, Japanese, or The Crush, a local Monmouth wine bar for wine and a yummy dessert ~~~or ~~~ some extraordinary Mexican Food at San Antonio's in Independence. Be sure to try The Oven Bird Bakery in Independence for DELICIOUS baked goods, coffee, quiche, sandwiches, etc. For a beautiful view/setting, consider dining (and wining) at the Independence Hotel, Territory Restaurant/Lounge either inside or outside, at the edge of the Willamette River. Or enjoy the food at a very popular new local brewry, Gilgamesh on Main Street, Indie. Other Main street attractions in Indie, include two Italian Restaurants and a delicious Thai Restaurant. I love the art gallery on Main Street, The River Gallery! While visiting Indie, save 90 or so minutes to stroll through a beautiful (free) local garden, sponsored by the Polk County Master Gardener Program through Oregon State University. Turn South off of Monmouth Avenue then right on G street in Indie, take a deep breath and be in awe of Inspiration Gardens, a project through the dedication of hundreds of hours of volunteer work, sponsored by the Polk County Master Gardener Program through Oregon State University in cooperation with the City of Independence. Be prepared in both side-by-side towns to be in awe of the quaint small town feel that offers you a crossroads to adventures, the beauty of the Pacific Northwest Landscapes, vineyards, breweries, and warm kind residents! Guest access There are several areas within the fenced back yard that offer a table and chairs awaiting outdoors for outdoor garden dining or leisure relaxation in good weather. And feel free to "pick your dinner" from a huge array of organically grown fruits and vegetables from the garden, and surrounding fruit trees, when available. Other things to note If you have the time and a car, a day trip/picnic over to the Oregon coast is only a 90 minute drive through beautiful countryside and the low elevation Oregon Coast Range. Also a tour of local wineries is always a treat! If you'd like to stroll through a breathtaking plant nursery [many Native species], Dancing Oaks Nursery {check out online} will be an enchanting experience, only 20 minutes into the countryside at the base of the Coast Range... Plants from around the world world that fit into our climate and environment... A Gardeners Delight!
