The River House at Cherry Ridge

A modern farmhouse with breathtaking views of the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains. Situated on a 100-acre working farm, amidst vineyards and fruit orchards, this 2 bedroom, 2.5 bath accommodates 6 guests with the additional pull out queen size bed. Visit Frederic Church’s Olana, one of the historic sites on the Hudson River Skywalk, a walking trail accessible at the end of the farm road. Enjoy award winning local wines just a short walk away, at the Whitecliff Winery tasting room. The space The house is just a short drive to Hudson with its antique shops and trendy restaurants, or a few minutes to Catskill for quaint small town shopping or dinner out. In the evenings, relax on the deck where you can watch ships go by or just enjoy the sunset over the mountains. A 2 mile walk will take you to the historic Thomas Cole house, once home to one of the famous painters from the movement known as the Hudson River School of Painting. This year (2025) celebrates the 200th anniversary of his first trip to Catskill, NY. A 2 mile walk in the opposite direction will take you to the Olana historic site. This was once the home of Frederic Church, yet another painter from the Hudson River School of Painting from the 19th century. His home can be seen on the hilltop to the east, overlooking the River House. Having completed your walking tour, you can relax at the Whitecliff Winery tasting room located just a few hundred feet from the River House. Some additional history: Our property is located about a mile north of where the Beach family once operated the river-crossing Greendale Ferry from about 1853 to 1936. The ferry went from a place known then as Oak Hill Station on the east side to Catskill Creek on the west. Service terminated soon after the Rip Van Winkle Bridge opened in 1935. Charles Beach had previously purchased and operated the famous Catskill Mountain House which was actually visible from our property until 1963 when New York State burned it down. The site of the Mountain House can still be visited at North-South Lake State Park which is about a 20 mile drive. There you can take in the breathtaking view once witnessed by U. S. Grant, Chester Arthur, Teddy Roosevelt, Washington Irving, Frederick Church, and Thomas Cole. Church created a painting in 1848 entitled "Morning, Looking East Over the Hudson Valley from the Catskill Mountains" from that location. The Mountain House itself may be seen in a painting (around 1846) by Thomas Cole appropriately titled "Catskill Mountain House".
