The Farmhouse at Balcony Downs
The Farmhouse at Balcony Downs
Description
This 1930s farmhouse is a hidden gem nestled on a historic estare at the foothills of the Blue Ridge. With an abundance of outdoor activities on site and nearby, Balcony Downs is a wonderland for the adventurous. Due to the age of this cottage, it has some quirks that you should consider before booking: 1. The bathroom is on the 2nd floor. 2. The stairs are steep, irregular & open on one side. 3. The shower is small and may be difficult for tall or larger individuals. The space If you are looking to unplug and love the outdoors, wildlife or just the peaceful tranquility of the Blue Ridge country, this family run property is just for you! Nestled on a 235 acre estate in the Blue Ridge and surrounded by national forest, you can walk to spring fed creeks; climb to the top of the mountain ridge; enjoy abundant wildlife; explore the wonders of the Blue Ridge Parkway; kayak the James and Maury Rivers or fish from the farm's own pond. Please see the house manual, check-in requirements and additional notes for more information and FAQ. Guest access There are many options for exploring both on and off the property. Some of the local attractions include: Natural Bridge & museum Natural Caverns VMI The Blue Ridge Parkway Local wineries and breweries River expeditions Local antique and artisan shops Kayaking and canoeing Fishing World class cycling ATV and motocross trails Horseback trails Virginia's Equestrian Center Goshen Pass Private waterfall expeditions Glen Maury Park and events Ghost tours Other things to note To access the creek, hiking trails and swimming holes (depending on rainfall), go to the top of the hill at the back right corner of the property, and you will see the trailhead. Follow the trail to the fork and go right. Continue even when it looks like the trail stops; just look for orange paint on the trees to mark the path to the creek. Follow up the creek as far as you like. You will have to cross the creek several times, depending on water levels, so make sure you mark where to cross for your return hike.
