The space This charming cottage was once the town barber shop and is over 100 years old. It's a bright and sunny room with light filtering through the original paned glass windows. The kitchen is small but efficient and outfitted with everything you would need to prepare a meal. The bathroom is newly renovated. The queen size bed is made up in high thread count linens and the Ralph Lauren living room furniture with feather & down cushions makes a cozy extra bed. Park (free) and walk to three highly rated restaurants, including the well known Happy Creek Coffee and bike shop a half a block walk. Spend time in our own shops and galleries or a 10 minute drive will take you to Middleburg or a number of picturesque wineries for tastings. Bring your bikes to roll down country roads or take a nice trail ride at Marriott Ranch. Hike at Sky Meadow in nearby Paris Virginia. Several golf courses within 20 minutes. The Plains was recently voted "Best Town to Visit" by Blue Ridge Travel and is home to the world famous "Gold Cup Steeple Chase". It's only an hour from DC and one mile off of I-66 but it's a whole new world from the crowds, stress and traffic. Other things to note Our cottage is a spacious studio (over 400 sq.ft) and the comment we most often get when guests arrive is "Oh! It's much larger than it looks online!". There is a separate kitchen area that I would describe as an "efficiency" kitchen. In other words it's easy to cook in and easy to clean.there is one long counter with a Carrara marble counter. Actually the marble top sits atop a piece of furniture that was custom made and painted to fit the space and make the most of the space. It has a sink which it more like a bar sink but big enough to wash and rinse the dishes/glasses/pots and pans which are all provided. There is a toaster oven which is big enough to bake a small kitchen or to make a frittata and most anything else that you might bake in a regular oven. For heating soup or boiling water for pasta, there is what people refer to as a hot plate which is an electric counter top burner. In addition to a refrigerator, there is a microwave, coffee pot and electric teapot. Over the years, I've had many people stay for as long as a month to six months and love the ease and simplicity of a simple lifestyle. Not a lot of "stuff" means not a lot of "stuff" to take care of. WE TAKE DOGS ONLY, sorry, NO CATS. The bed was designed by little ole' me! It's a generous queen with a head and foot board that were hand carved in Indonesia by craftsmen in the style of Arts and Crafts with a little Nouveau. The bed was designed extra long to accommodate even very tall men with our feeling cramped. The furniture in the living area is designed by Ralph Lauren and is big, deep and comfortable. The cushions are a feather and down blend and very comfortable to sit, lounge or even sleep on. The floors are painted cement. This building was once the town barbershop. So the floors were put in to be easy to clean and mop. I have cover most of the floor with oriental rugs that I have gathered from my travels. The decor is a mixture of fabrics, rugs and textiles from around the world, I would call the style bohemian. There is a 40" TV, not huge like a lot of people are now used to, but big enough to watch a movie or game comfortably. And most people coming out to the country are spending their time enjoying the countryside. The cottage is on a quiet side street and very private but there is a train that comes through a few blocks away so if you are a very light sleeper, let me know and I will provide you with a sound machine. There is free high speed internet also which is a rarity out here, so you can enjoy the rural setting and stay connected to the real world as well. What else? You can walk to three great restaurants with bars and an awesome coffee shop, Happy Creek Coffee. Their are beautiful parks, hiking, wineries and too much to list here but you won't be bored! We do take dogs on approval and sorry no cats.
