The floors are NEVER rented separately, as we know guests like privacy. Your group will be the only one on the property. If you want help finding the other listings please let us know. Guests have access to all areas of the grounds and the house except for 2 locked closets, the attic, and the utility area that is also locked. The garage is available to guests. ——- ABOUT THE HOUSE The big sister to Conley House, Doug's Way is an original Doug Sigler home. Doug Sigler was a well known woodworker at Penland and in the region. His designer touches can be seen throughout the house. When you are there note the tight dovetails and hand planing of the cherry wood cabinets. Our guests also enjoy the artwork, for instance the steel wall pieces which were commissioned for the cabin. These are accented with botanical prints by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and framed pages from books on architectural ironwork, plus smaller sculptures and art pieces that we have collected over the years. This cabin is homey and comfortable with all the trappings of craft and luxury. You’ll feel right at home. NEIGHBORHOOD The neighborhood is upscale, quiet and safe. Most of the homes in the neighborhood were also built by Doug Sigler. The property is situated above the North Toe River, which can be heard rustling along from the decks that wrap around both sides of the cabin. ——- PROXIMITY 1.9 miles (m.) - Penland School of Crafts 9.1 m. - Ingles Market, a full-service grocery store with traditional, natural and organic selections and a full-service pharmacy. 4.8 m. - Downtown Spruce Pine & Riverside Park 13 m. - Walmart, Spruce Pine 14 m. - National Mineral Museum 13 m. - Mount Mitchell State Park 16 m. - Roan Mountain State Park 19 m. - Lake James State Park 28 m. - Jonas Ridge (snow tubing) 33 m. - Downtown Asheville 34 m. - Sugar Mountain (skiing) 5.2 m. - Hospital & ER ——- THINGS TO DO When you register you will be sent a PDF booklet with all sorts of thing to do, broken into types of excursions and parts of the region. Hiking the Roan or to waterfalls can be spectacular with almost no one else on the trail. However, in winter (usually mid-December through February or mid-March) some businesses keep different hours or even close, while others do creative things like popup restaurants and special winter openings. If you are concerned about what might be available please ask us. We'd be happy to assist you in deciding if visiting in the off-season would be a good fit. ——- OTHER THINGS TO KNOW WHAT IS THE ROAD LIKE? IS 4-WHEEL DRIVE NECESSARY? 4-Wheel/All Wheel drive is not necessary. We visited the region for years in a Honda sedan without issue. Rear wheel drive vehicles with low ground clearance (like hatchbacks and several mini-vans), as well as light vehicles (Prius and 2-wheel drive trucks), are not ideal and take the most experience to drive in NC. The way to the cabin is almost entirely on paved roads. The last 1-2 minutes is on a gravel road with one steep spot just before you turn onto our lane which is flat. FALL FOLIAGE: Typically fall foliage begins October 1 and, barring an early frost, ends the first week of November. It usually peaks around the 20th through late October. PHONE SERVICE: Verizon is the primary mobile carrier for the area. Other mobile users are encouraged to check their carrier's coverage in the region. Feel free to enable Internet Calling on your mobile device and use your phone over our WiFi network. ——- Guests have access to all areas of the grounds and the house, except for 2 locked closets and the utility area that is also locked. The garage is available using the door opener. We live off-site and are very responsive by phone, text, and email. If you need recommendations on what to do in the area, directions, or have a question about the property, we are always more than happy to help. While we do not live close-by, we do have many local resources to help out should onsite assistance be needed. We will do everything we can to make sure you enjoy every minute of your getaway. Located at the end of the road, the home is safe, private, and quiet, yet is just 15 minutes from restaurants and shopping in Spruce Pine and Burnsville, and 48 miles to Asheville. Doug Sigler was a well known artist who built many homes in the area. He moved to Penland, like the hundreds of other artists in the town, to be close to Penland School of Crafts, America's oldest and largest craft school. The region is filled with hiking trails, waterfalls, and outdoor activities in abundence. GPS is not correct. Directions and access instructions will be emailed to you prior to arrival. There is no public transportation and currently Uber and Lift are not available. WHAT IS THE ROAD LIKE? IS 4-WHEEL DRIVE NECESSARY? 4-Wheel/All Wheel drive is not necessary.
