Built in 1908 and well preserved and loved over the decades. The front garden once featured a massive 200 year old Oak tree from which we named the property. The front garden is enclosed with an iron fence and gate with off street parking. The house is divided into two private apartments each with an entrance form the front porch. There is a lovely covered patio in the private back garden. Inside the apartment you will find an inviting space with tasteful decor and all the comfort of home. The space Whispering Oak was built in 1908. It has been lovingly cared for and you will not find a more peaceful and inviting retreat and convenient location to all that is great about Memphis. The property has a beautiful private backyard garden with covered patio. The location is right in the heart of midtown. It is steps away from historic Overton Square entertainment district where you will find endless dining options, one being the historic Lafayette’s Music Room. There are so many great spots to kick off your evening or wrap up your evening before heading back to your peaceful retreat at Whispering Oak. You may want to check the playbooks for The Playhouse on the Square and Circuit Playhouse and enjoy some local live theater. Only a few blocks away is another quaint little area called Cooper/Young. It is a neighborhood surrounded by quaint Victorian homes and locally owned restaurants. A couple of our favorites are The Beauty Shop and Tsunami. While you are visiting Cooper/Young be sure to stop in Buff City Soap and enjoy selecting your favorite locally made bar of soap and stop in Burkes Books and Goner Records. La Rouche is the newest addition to the neighborhood and becoming a favorite with the locals. However, for Mediterranean our go to will always be Casablanca in midtown on Madison. If you want to enjoy some good fried chicken Hattie B’s is an easy walk from Whispering Oak and Paradox Gift Shop is always fun for browsing. Only 5 minutes away is historic Overton Park which is lovely to explore on a bike or scooter or simply by foot as you enjoy the massive 500 year old trees in the old forest. In the park you will find the Memphis Zoo which is ranked #2 in the country and you will truly find it unique. You can also enjoy the Brooks Museum of Art and just behind the Museum is the Overton Park Shell where Elvis performed his first live concert. Crosstown Concourse, the award winning renovation of the Sears Tower is also only 10 minutes drive from Whispering Oak. This is the largest building in Tennessee. Housed in this massive structure are a variety of dining options, a bakery, a coffee shop, a gelato shop and even a brewery and theater. You will not want to miss an opportunity to take a peek at this masterpiece of architecture and design and maybe enjoy a Mempop during your tour. Another best kept secret in midtown on Overton Park Avenue is Ecco restaurant where you can stop in for a cocktail or savor a delicious meal. You may want to call ahead for a reservation. Downtown offers a variety of attractions unique to Memphis and only a 10 min Uber drive. Downtown you must see the mighty Mississippi River. A great place to view it is from the top of the Pyramid. We also recommend you visit the Peabody Hotel and see the famous Peabody Ducks that live in the fountain. While Downtown you will want to visit the National Civil Right Museum and have a good southern breakfast at the Arcade and then maybe a walk on the bridge at the Big River Crossing. Then later grab a cocktail or a bite to eat at the many dining options along South Main. The biggest attraction in our great city is Graceland and Sun Studios so be sure to book your tickets for these two during your stay. You may find yourself wishing you had planned to stay longer. Aside from all the beauty, culture, art and diversity that you will find in midtown you may prefer to take a moment to chill and refuel with a beverage on the front porch and just observe the sunset. There is a lovely fenced back garden and covered patio. Other things to note There is a lock box on the porch with a 4 digit access code that we will provide for you on the day of check in as it changes after each guest. When returning the key to the box at check out you will need to use the instructions to close the box as you did when opening it. Push down clear tab and enter 4 digit code. Please be sure to lock both the iron door and wood door when leaving.
