Description

Your pied-à-terre on Sugar Hill in the Jumel Terrace Historic District. Formerly a rare bookshop, the garden suite resounds with Harlem Heights' history from the Founding Fathers thru the Founding Brothers to our vibrant now. Think privacy, quiet, autonomy and a garden in bloom. Short walk, one subway stop, to NY/Columbia-Presbyterian. This is a two family house. Fully compliant with NYC short term rental laws. Hosts discretely present during your stay. The space Your pied-à-terre on Sugar Hill. You'll be the only guests of this owner occupied, self contained yet attached garden suite directly across the street from the Morris-Jumel Mansion, George Washington’s headquarters for 1776′s Battle of Harlem Heights and home to the infamous grand horizontal, Madame Jumel. At the time Duke Ellington dubbed the house “The Crown of Sugar Hill,” the immediate neighborhood was also home to Joe Louis, W.E.B. DuBois, Paul Robeson, Count Basie, Lena Horne, Coleman Hawkins, Andy Kirk, Don Redman, Thurgood Marshall, and dozens of other Jazz Age Masters. The guest suite features a private entrance, full kitchen and bath (shower), a common room on the garden with single/day bed (Charles Rogers), the large center bedroom with an antique full-sized bed (arguably the quietest room in NYC), and the second, larger, front bedroom with an opulent queen size (Jessica Chastain size) 19th century French brass bed. We pride ourselves on the quality of our mattresses. All bedding has high thread counts linens, is hypo-allergenic and protected. The full kitchen features coffee/tea facilities and welcome food supplies (fresh gourmet coffee, fresh fruit). Rooms are furnished in a comfortable, eclectic mix with bookish comforts. There's abundant seating, two desks, two round tables, cable television, a record player, a Harlem-centric record collection, a large library on local history African & American, internet access, and a full ornamental garden with a gas grill. Wine and dine al fresco on Sunday afternoons as the sounds of Marjorie Elliot’s Parlor Jazz waft from her near by apartment. There is housekeeping service and owners on the premises to assist you in any want or need. This is perhaps the privatest and quietest guest suite in New York City and wholly fills the most exacting legals criteria. Enjoy local museums, entertainments and Sugar Hill cuisine, old New York charms, and easy transportation (subways and buses within two blocks, car services readily available.) On premises: library conference rooms, parlor and garden party rentals, computer, internet service, laundry service, cable television, record & Bluetooth players. The house’s photo shoot, conference and party facilities rates are available on inquiry. The house has been featured in Vogue ('All That Jazz', Bruce Weber with Jessica Chastain & Omar Sy, Elle (for Gucci), Glamour (for Amanda Gorman as their "Woman of the Year" and the video of her poem "Learning to Love Through Loss"), The New York Times, The Daily News, The Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, Le Monde and has been filmed by HBO, PBS, Arte, by Tiana Taylor for Air Jordan, by Remy Ma for Nike, and multiple independent features. There is a parlor floor gallery and dining room and several libraries suitable for meetings, lectures, film & photo shoots, and exhibitions. Inquire for costs. Guest access Street parking, nearby indoor lots, subway (3 min. walk), bus (2 min. walk). Groceries, pharmacies, liquor stores, dry cleaners, a public library as close.
