A quiet country setting: two miles of dirt road lead to our house from the nearest paved road. We are surrounded by 1000 acres of land conserved by The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests (SPNHF). We oversee the open spaces: sometimes cattle graze in the pasture, forage crops are grown in the fields in the summer, and maple sap is gathered in the early spring. SPNHF conducts forest research and harvests timber in the wooded areas. Hiking & non-motorized activities are permitted. Our 1790’s post-and-beam farmhouse has wide-board, uneven, creaky floors upstairs and old, patched, mixed narrow and wide pine board floors downstairs. Original hand-hewn 25-foot hemlock beams—the width of the house—highlight the ceiling in the kitchen-dining room. Bedrooms are small, cheery, and comfortable. None has a separate closet, but door-racks, bureaus, shelves, and/or cabinets provide space for clothes. The “Blue Room”, so-called because of the blue-edged handmade quilt, is a small cozy, single-brass-bed room on the second floor. It is ideal for a hiker or biker who spends his/her time outdoors and wants a comfortable corner to lay his/her head for a good night’s sleep. The three upstairs bedrooms share a bathroom; downstairs bedroom has its own. All twin mattresses are new and very comfortable, covered with country-patterned quilts made by our niece. Being back in the hills, we have no TV, slow internet, and dubious cell reception. We do have a land line with unlimited free U.S. long distance, available to guests. We have a big selection of DVD & VHS movies, and the “Purple Room” has an old TV set that plays DVDs and VHS movies. We have hundreds of books. You are welcome to make yourself at home in the kitchen/dining room area. We (retired couple) live in the house and are on the property or in the neighborhood most of the time. There are miles of country dirt roads to explore on foot or by bike. One 3-mile road leads directly to New Hampshire’s only National Park, The Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park, open May through October. Kimball Union Academy, a college-preparatory school, is 6 miles away. The Cornish-Windsor bridge, the longest two-span wooden covered bridge in the country, is 5.8 miles away. We are 18 miles south of both Dartmouth College and the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Two country stores, one 5.9 miles away, the other 4.3 miles, have gas, good delis, and friendly, local ownership. There is a supermarket 6.8 miles away in Windsor, VT (across the famous covered bridge). You will need your own car here. The roads are well maintained. We have ots of space for parking.
