The Artist’s Nest has the feel of a well-equipped, cozy cottage located in the first floor of a 275+ year-old barn. This renovated jewel has many new amenities, while its exposed original beams offer an elegant, Vermont rustic charm. *If guests only desire 1 bedroom, and up to 2 persons the price goes down to $125/night plus a 9% Vermont Rooms and Meals Tax. Visit the separate listing: The Artist's Nest Apartment (1 bedroom option for 1- 2 people) on AirBnb. Designed to host artists who study fine art at Village Arts of Putney and with master painters Richard Schmid and Nancy Guzik, this summer of 2017 will be the first time we open this space to AirBnb guests! We keep the fully functioning kitchen stocked with basics like coffee (French press or coffee pot), teas, sugar, some condiments, snacks and cereals, peanut butter and jam! For an extra fee, we can stock whatever foods you would like. This unique setting is a nature lover and artist's paradise located on 28 acres including meadows, beaver wetlands, a Secret Garden down in our Long Meadow for relaxing or having a fire, and nearby 100 acres of nature trails for hiking and snowshoeing. Imagine all that nature and only a five minute walk to the village! Guests have free range of this safe, rural property close to the village, access to The Secret Garden, and hiking around the wetlands and access to the nature trails in the adjacent 100 acre Town Forest. In the winter, our Long Meadow is perfect for x-country skiing and snowshoeing with a hill for sledding and snow-tubing. There are 3 kayaks and a canoe available for use. JD McCliment's Pub & Restaurant is about a 12 minute, leisurely walk which passes through the our nature reserve and pond where beavers, birds and wildlife can be enjoyed. There is also The Putney Community Baseball Field near that area with games on most summer weekends. Owners live within a stone's throw through a wooded garden and can often be found puttering around the grounds. Capt. John is a retired master of tall ships and is a very congenial Brit with a wonderful sense of humor. Penelope is a therapist for adolescents at The Putney School and the Greenwood School both located up Putney mountain. Capt. John and Penelope are co-owners of Village Arts of Putney and The Artist's Nest. They are available if you need assistance. Located just outside the village center, this safe property has a rural flavor. The area is full of writers, artists, farmers, actors, sculptors, glass artists, educators, entrepreneurs, and musicians. A few (country) doors north of us is the Hidden Springs Maple Syrup Store housed in a lovely barn with maple products, artisan gifts and delicious ice cream cones. Throughout the summer Putney hosts Twilight at the Tavern with live musicians outside on the green, and a farmer's market on Sunday mornings across the street from the Putney Co-op. International students and guests come to Putney for education, to study music and art, and to enjoy our many events: The Yellow Barn Music Festival, The Sandglass International Puppet Theatre, the Putney Arts & Crafts Studio Tour, Village Arts of Putney fine arts workshops, and Next Stage Arts performance center. Visitors also love Basketville which houses a wide variety of gifts, baskets, culinary items, toys, clothes, Vermont products, a tractor seat collection and wine tasting from the Putney Winery. Culinary offerings range from the very affordable Putney Diner to The Gleanery, a high-end, local-vore, fine-dining establishment. All are within walking distance! Bus transportation is available four times a day between Putney, Brattleboro and Bellows Falls. Access to Amtrak train stations are located in Brattleboro and Bellows Falls. A taxi service and an Enterprise Car Rental agency at the opposite end of that town. Closest airports are Hartford, CT (1 ½ hrs, Interstate 91 all the way to Putney, VT), Manchester, NH (1.25 hrs on a winding road), and Boston Airport (2.25 hrs). If you are from warmer climates, please know that winter weather is not always predictable in the northeast. We are dependent upon snowplows to clear and sand our roads and driveways. Always add a little extra time for safe winter travel.
