The Farm at Marshtown, Dover DE
This entire house on this working farm is available all year except for a few weeks in the winter. Large grounds and pavilion. The house is located on a 500 acre farm and is very private. There may be hunters in the fields but it is very far from the house. Please ask if you want to access the fields . There are Large yards for outdoor use and plenty big enough for most activities. There are pastures for horses, cows, chicken runs, goat pens and kennels for dogs and barn cats roaming around. The space Very private get away that is part of a working farm. Cozy with a mix of new furniture and antiques. The décor leans to a outdoor/hunting theme. The house is large with spacious rooms. The house is newly renovated with all modern conveniences. However, it is still 160 years old. The original heart pine floors are a bit creaky and the original doors are not perfect. It has two zone, heat and air, full-size washer and dryer, dishwasher, etc. Well stocked with many items you will need for a short stay. We have huge outdoor spaces. Mature landscaping surrounds the house. The back deck has a very small hot tub (good for two people but I have seen four in there) and small 8' wide 2' deep, stock-tank pool. Subject to the time of the year, guests are welcome to use it. There are five queen beds in three bedrooms. The family room has a futon and the living room has a queen pull-out sofa. Therefore, the house sleeps seven individually. Quality bed linen and bath towels are provided along with soap/shampoo. I keep the kitchen stocked with the basics (condiments/spices, etc) and suggest you take a look before shopping. I have quality knives, pots, pans and small appliances such as food processors and waffle makers for all your cooking needs. I have three sets of dishes for lare groups. If you have more than five guests, I charge $25 per guest per night per person. Children over 5YO count as guests. I have two very nice cots with mattresses that I can set up. I need 48 hour advanced notice for additional beds. Thanks for following this house rules. Any questions please call me. There is a large fire pit in the backyard with plenty of chairs. Firewood is provided next to the shed but do not use if the wind is blowing more than 10 mph. There are two working gas fireplaces in the kitchen and living room. info will be provided prior to check-in. We have Wi-Fi through the satellite and download speeds are slower than cable. WiFi is limited the house and porch Please note premium pricing ( plus $100 per night) in effect for NASCAR (fall and spring races), Firefly and federal holiday weekends. I collect this upon arrival. Guest access You get access to the entire house and grounds. Welcome to visit the pastures and enclosures with animals. They are friendly. No access to barns without prior approval. Please note the barn has a four-camera video monitoring. I have a caretaker (April) who comes each morning at 9:30 for the animals. Feel free to ask to join her. The animals are friendly and it is a fun way to spend some time. Treats for the animals are provided. We have twenty laying hens at the farm producing a dozen eggs a day in season. Chickens do not lay eggs in the winter. Wire baskets are on the porch to collect eggs. The coop and nesting boxes have easy access so kids can take part. Fresh eggs are delicious. They stop laying in the fall and don’t start again till spring. New this year are several vegetable gardens. You are welcome to pick what you will use while at the farm. Please only pick what you will use during your stay. Different crops are mostly available mid- summer to early fall. Some of those include: Watermelon, Sweet Corn, Beans, Sweet Potatoes, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Strawberries, Blueberries, Raspberries, Blackberries, Cantaloupe, Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Eggplant, etc. Pumpkins, Gourds, Squash and Indian Corn in the fall. Of course, this is subject to the weather and availability , so check first if this is important to you and no promises since it is very seasonal. Several vases are in the kitchen and I allow guest to clip flowers for display during your stay. Please don't cut more than you need for a single arrangement, so that the next guests can be afforded the same opportunity. Other things to note There are many animals on the farm. They are there to enjoy but please don't go in with them. Ask the caretaker April to assist. She is there every morning (outside only) to take care of them. The grounds are so large you may never see her unless you walk down to the barn There are also Seven dogs at the farm. Please do not open the kennels. They are happy to have visitors. If you check in with them they don't bark too much. If they bother you, I can move them to the barn. There is a small can with milk bones but no more than one treat each per day. They will be your best buddies after that. Our dogs work at the hunting preserve in the winter and are English Setters, Cocker Spaniel and English Pointers. Hunters may be in the field during the winter. No hunters are close to the house and will have no impact on your stay. The farm is very large and please do not assume you will access all 500 acres. Crops are in the field six months of the years. This is a real farm in the spring and fall tractors will be in the fields planting. The animals make noises and in the summer they smell like, well animals. You are by the Delaware Bay and certain times in the summer the bugs can be bad. The house has screens in the windows but bug spray works great especially at dusk or windless days. Can I ride the horses is a question I get all the time. Happy to handline kids in the pasture on the small ponies or a full size horse. However, you can’t just jump on a horse and drive them like a car. I don't let Adults ride the horses anymore and I am sorry for that. If you own horses you will understand the huge risk involved here and understand previous guests have mis-represented their experience. I do permit potential guests to meet me for a tour. However, the farm is a very busy place and I do not do tours when the place is booked. Therefore, if you want to come see it, you will have to follow my schedule.
