The space Our backhouse studio cottage features about 400 square feet of space, cathedral ceilings, has 2 really comfortable Queen-Plus (almost a King size) American Leather Comfort Sleeper Sofa (sleeps better than a lot of regular beds), has a large flatscreen TV (with Roku box and an antenna for free TV but no cable) and media center with access to Netflix and other streaming media services, free Wi-Fi, A/C and heater, ceiling fan, lots of natural light via the windows and skylight, a decorative fireplace, low-maintenance carpet, wardrobe armoire, dresser, desk, chairs, lamps, mini-fridge, mini-microwave, Keurig coffee maker, bath towels and bath amenities (body wash, conditioning shampoo, lotion, etc.), and a private attached bathroom (sink, stall shower & toilet- please bring own toothbrush and toothpaste). There is generally no access to the main house, which means that there is no access to a kitchen or laundry- however (!) there is a mini-fridge and microwave as well as a coin laundromat literally across the street and lots of food options including the Trader Joe's also literally across the street. This is an adorable backhouse studio- but there are several important things to note before booking: (1) The studio has a dedicated 40 gallon electric water heater- which should provide enough hot water for about 25 minutes of hot shower time. (2) the studio is NOT insulated- meaning that the winters are chilly (yes! even in Southern CA!) and the summers are brutally hot. However, we have a well-functioning and mounted room 22,000 BTU air conditioner and heater (and space heaters, fans and extra blankets as needed) to keep you toasty or cool, depending on the season. (3) the studio is very well-lit with natural light through the windows and skylight- and will not be dark once the sun comes up (so not good for vampire types who want a pitch black room during the day...)- the windows have blinds but the skylight can't be blocked (the So Cal sun will shine!!). (4) No laundry facilities on site- there is a coin laundry across the street and lots of eating options within a 7 minutes walking distance, including a bustling Trader Joe's literally steps away from the house. There is also no kitchen on site. However, there is a minifridge and microwave with some plates and utensils to make some simple microwave meals. (5) Free street parking during the day. Overnight street parking in this neighborhood is by permit only, which can be purchased up the street at the police station for $2 a night. There is a vending machine in the lobby that is open 24/7 at 1422 Mission St. or you can get one in advance online. Do an online search for "South Pasadena street parking permits" to purchase online. (6) Birds and squirrels love our backyard and sometimes scurry along the roof of the cottage and house- don't be alarmed, it's just the squirrel friend. (7) Speaking of animals- there are flocks of green wild parrots that sing and squawk around our home. Some are bothered by them (as they can get loud!)- I personally love them as I feel like I'm in the Amazon Rain Forest! (8) We have our 3 kids who play and exercise in the backyard and in an exercise/rec room adjacent to the cottage, so you may hear/see people playing in the yard or exercising in the adjacent rec room.
