Angelwing Room-downtown Point Arena
Sunny private room & bath, in artist's home/gallery on the Mendocino coast. Queen bed, seating area, dresser, closet, coffeemaker, fridge, microwave. Shared front yard, super short walk to downtown Point Arena. Walkable to ocean hikes! The space It is a charming, often sun-drenched, comfortable room and bath located on the ground floor front of a house in the heart of Point Arena, one of California's tiniest incorporated cities. Located only 25 feet from Hwy. 1 (Main Street), the house and room are nonetheless very private, shielded by a cedar tree right in front of the Angelwing's east-facing picture window. Hwy. 1, which runs along the edge of the Pacific Ocean, is not only gorgeous, but civilized: traffic drops to nearly nothing after dark and this location is quiet at night. In the morning, though, you will hear traffic as the town wakes up. The Angelwing Room is convenient because nearly every amenity that PA has to offer is accessible on foot. You can drift out the front door and within minutes, get the best chocolate croissant from here to SF and a dark french roast, enjoy the hushed interior of a historic theater, have a drink in a local brewpub or - after a ½-mile walk to our cove - sit mesmerized by the ebb and flow of the immense Pacific Ocean. The house is Lauren's art studio and business headquarters, so either she or a family member will be available to give you directions, help, and advice. Lauren is the former Mayor of Point Arena and knows where you might want to go, what you might like to see, hear and do. Local beaches and ocean access points may interest you, or you may just want to get away. The Angelwing Room, in the heart of Point Arena, is a very good place to be far from the rest of the world; because of coastal fog, it can be like a modest, modern Avalon. The house itself is an old redwood structure dating from around 1900, remodeled in the forties. It is funky, but full of creativity and (we hope) charm! We strive to keep the room spotlessly clean and the hall area neat; at the same time, it is an old house with some original decorative features. It has been home to Lauren and her (now grown) sons and many sleep-overs, gatherings of friends, political events, and late night working since she came to California in a school bus in 1999. She and her sons lived a year in that bus in the redwoods, then bought this magical place in 2000. It is very lived in, but the guest room is the most modernized part. A note about climate: the northern California coast is very cool and often damp. Bring warm clothes no matter what the season! Guest access *The room with its own bathroom. *The front hall of the house with your dedicated zone of amenities (mini fridge, microwave, coffee-maker, games, toys for kids). *The entire outside front yard, with chairs under the angels, sheltered by hedges and an aromatic cedar tree. During your stay I like to welcome my guests in person whenever possible, but there's a self-check in process if needed. I'm always available to answer questions. It is helpful to communicate about departure time, as well as arrival. I'm super flexible, but sometimes need to plan. Texting directly my cell is perhaps the best way to reach me, even when we are all there at the same house, since the front is quite separate from the rest. If desired, I can offer guests very good advice about driving routes and what they might want to do here. Not everything is available all the time, so if you choose to outline your objectives and timing, I can let you know what's going on. I wish to give guests all the privacy they desire and to enjoy their experience as they see fit; at the same time, I have really enjoyed visiting and occasionally dining with guests when it works out. Other things to note Although best suited to individuals and couples, the space could accommodate a parent or couple and small child. There is just one (queen) bed. Remember, the coast is very cool, no matter how hot it may be even a few miles inland! Bring flexible clothing. If you need an iron and ironing board, please ask. ALSO please know that a number of businesses here only accept cash or checks, so plan ahead. If you're stuck, there is a Redwood Credit Union in town with an ATM.
